Ebay does not charge 4.50 on a $10 sale.

Just so everyone know what the post is about...
Your 9.99 item had $11.64 for shipping plus sales tax probably. The fee is 12.55% on the order total in most categories for non-store users. If it was an international buyer there is an additional 1.65% fee.

My sale for $11.00 only had $1.97 in fees under the collectibles category. So you are either not looking at this correctly or you are not stating the truth of your sale. Your fees are based off the total of your item price, plus shipping, plus taxes, and for collectibles it is 12.55%. Best of luck to you....

You sold the cup and saucer for $9.99 your buyer also paid $11.64 for shipping.
Total received from buyer = $21.63 + sales tax ( let's assume 10% is $2.16)
Total $23.79 x 12.55% = $2.98 + 0.30 transfer fee = FVF $3.28

Price of shipping is calculated based on buyer location.
What you missed before listing is that eBay charges fees on the total amount (item + shipping + sales tax) so you need to price your items knowing you'll pay fees on that entire amount.
That little 2" cup with saucer was probably light enough even with proper packing materials to go First Class. Even regular Priority Mail instead of a Regional Rate A box would have cost less.

Probably doesn't make sense to list things for less than $25.00 unless you're selling in volume.

Just checking: You do know that eBay's FVF is charged on the item price, the shipping cost and the state sales tax, if any.
In light of that information, would you like to return and show us your figures for this transaction?
Also, many sellers here have long ago decided not to ever list any item for less than at least $20.

Move to china, that 1 sale is more than a days wage for them.

Well for those of us with only modest savings after paying for medical insurance out of pocket for decades, a $5 net profit buys a healthy salad at Trader Joe's for lunch.
