WHY DO I HAVE TO PROVIDE PHOTO ID?  ALREADY PROVED MY IDENITY WITH A FED TAX ID, SALES TAX ID, AND HAVE BEEN A TOP RATED SELLER FOR YEARS.   YOU HAVE MY BANK ACCOUNT INFO, YOU HAVE BEEN DEPOSITING MONEY IN THAT ACCOUNT FOR YEARS WITHOUT INCIDENT.  TO GET THAT BANK ACCOUNT I HAD TO ALSO PROVIDE NUMEROUS PROOFS OF ID.  WHY WOULD A CORPORATION HAVE TO SINGLE OUT ONE PERSON TO PROVIDE PHOTO ID?   JUST ONE MORE WAY THAT MY IDENITY CAN BE HACKED.

You are not speaking to Ebay here, just other members. If you dont want to confirm your identity, then dont. Then sit back and wait for your account to be closed.

They haven't, they've asked a lot of sellers to provide a photo ID.

Have a great day.

They asked me about three weeks ago. I discovered my license in my scanner two weeks later. LOL

"WHY WOULD A CORPORATION HAVE TO SINGLE OUT ONE PERSON TO PROVIDE PHOTO ID?"

Maybe eBay just thinks you're prettier than the rest of us?

Personally, I am offended that eBay hasn't asked for my photograph.

It's interesting to me that requiring photo ID is so prominent in our modern world...

unless you're voting in fair and free elections...then requiring photo ID is discriminatory...huh?

I'm sure there must be sellers who are in the category of "Disenfranchised or Minority" that would have something to say about this requirement now in place on eBay.

Or are we coddling, with the utmost security, a $25 transaction on eBay for two packs of socks, Moreso than a transaction of voting in our Country? Now that I think about it, it's probably true.

That is most likely due to the Consumers Act S.936 available for reading:

https://www.congress.gov/bill/117th-congress/senate-bill/936/text

in its second part, it unfortunately encourages buyers to report each other, creating the possibility of false competition reports , without specifying any additional info on how such reports are to be handled by the online auction site. This seems only to apply to those who had 5k$ sales in 1-2 years, and or have sold more than 200 item in that period. Unfortunately, the ID requirement has been requested from users who do not fill the above criteria, and  who sold only few or several items and have not reached the mentioned sales amount. So apparently this requirement can be a result of either buyers reporting each other or it can be a result of misinterpreting of the above consumers act S.936 Consumers Act by the vendor of virtual sales or the auction site itself.

Me too  my  account is on hold because E bay wants a color valid photo ID.The fact I'm retired don't drive or travel anymore doesn't matter to them.I called told they Im retired. My work I D is expired 13 years My Passport expired during COVID-19 .I let my license expire since I no longer drive.  E bay presently has my name' address ,phone number ,dob ,ss# number  my bank account, and my pay pal info.and via pay pay my credit card .They are also connected via Facebook and Google to me   .I have been selling with them for over a decade They have no problem taking money when I buy and no problem taking their cut when I sell and use their postal services   They already took their cut for the sales they are holding ..Told them this is ridiculous they already have more than my bank does.I was told tough get a ID  ,it's in user agreement.Well it's not,the agreement does not say this is a MUST requirement.I think this is beyond ridiculous.

I got a laugh out of this!

I recently needed to supply my drivers license (not related to eBay but for similar reasons).

I don't use my scanner very often so it was 6 weeks before I realized I had been driving without a licence.

Thankfully I didn't get pulled over during those 6 weeks!

This is a zombie thread. Anyway,  go and get a valid ID.  Renew your license or get one of those ID type licenses.  You need a valid ID too incase you go to the hospital.   That is no excuse.  You need to prove to ebay that you are you!  Let's say that a seller dies and then his kids/spouse /neighbor uses the account.  That is illegal per ebay policy.  So a valid ID is required to prove that you are the rightful owner of this account .  Being retired is NOT an excuse.   Everyone needs a valid ID.

In about 6 months to a year, ebay will be REQUIRED by law to submit your money to your state government. Then you will have a real hard time proving that it is you inorder to get your money. I bet that the state will require a valid ID.      Give ebay what is required by law and you will get your money.  Do not bother reading the ebay agreement.  It's there.  And anyway, if it's not there when you signed up, ebay has the right to change the terms of service anytime for any reason.   Go and get a valid ID.   Believe me,  try getting service at a hospital w/o an ID.  An insurance card is not enough.  There is just so much fraud out there that you need to prove that you are you in many places, not just on ebay.

I'm elderly and do not drive, either.  I have a state-issued ID card that is identical in every other way to a driver's license.  Heck, it's even a Real-ID, so I can use it for domestic flights and to enter most federal buildings.  (Starting in 2025, everyone will need a Real ID to board planes and enter most federal buildings, by the way.)

You can get the same non-driver ID in New York State.  If going to get it is difficult for you, your Area or County Office on Aging will help you.  Give 'em a call.

Here's all the info you need to start:

How does ebay know that you are you?  I mean, what if your kids or spouse took over your account because you are ill , or in jail or died?  Don't laugh, this has happened. So ebay needs to make sure that you are you.  I have been here since 1998 with 2 selling accounts and I had to provide my photo ID for both accounts .  This is actually a good thing and ebay should do it every few years to make sure that the rightful owner is using the account.

As for Identity theft,  it easier for someone to get the Identity information from your smart phone as you are  using it in a very public place.
