payment pending concerns me. it says i get paid when the BUYER confirms he/she has the item. what if they do not check "the box" or write a comment? I don't get paid and they keep the item?

Ship with tracking and be sure the tracking number is attached to the transaction. If you print your label with eBay, it's automatic. If you buy your label anywhere else, which is fine too, you will likely have to manually enter the tracking number.
When tracking shows it delivered, your money is released.

Payment pending is that it has not yet completed.
So far I have had zero problems with such: if eBay says to ship it has been good.
Always use delivery confirmation and if high priced item signature confirmation
Note If you have not been selling in a while you may have holds on payments witch is different than pending.

If you are talking about the payment pending in managed payments, you are fine. Payouts are made daily/weekly depending on your choice, not instantaneously. If eBay says ok to ship, it is ok to ship. Payment has been received from the buyer, it just hasn't been credited to your bank account yet.

No, funds pending does not mean you do not get paid. This is part of eBay's checks and balances to ensure new sellers are legitimate. (There are fraudsters who sell and then don't ship.) Below is eBay's policy on payment holds, for your perusal.

If the buyer does not confirm delivery ( only about 40% of transactions get any feedback and tracking can be too expensive on low value items) the money will be released after 21 days, providing there is no Dispute opened.
Then on the next Tuesday it will be transferred to your bank.
