Did you mean:

no more storage unit, not a question

I've gotten a lot of advice here over the years about sitting on stockpiles of unlisted material. I still have some left but I  just emptied my storage unit. First time since Covid that I no longer have one. On some level I feel nervous about not having one but I know that the last thing I need is to add to the piles. I no longer push myself to do this work overtime. I make enough to keep money in my bank account for what I want to buy and that's good enough. I'm  63 and want to spend a lot of my time reading and on arts & crafts.

@keziak

GOOD FOR YOU!!!  CONGRATULATIONS!!  I know you have struggled with that for a long time.  That is a HUGE accomplishment.

I can imagine it has taken you a bit of time to get use to not having a storage unit.  And if it was one you were paying for, a little extra money in your pocket too.

What a wonderful Holiday Gift to yourself !!!  Job Well Done!

Freedom can feel scary sometimes.

Congratulations! I know it has been a journey for you.

Re: no more storage unit, not a question

Because of the death of my mother and youngest brother, along with the death of my wife's mother and youngest sister, We inherited a bunch of stuff. I was renting 3 lockers (2 large, and 1 small).

I now have paired down to just one large storage locker, but my house currently looks like Sanford and son. Got to get busy and go through this stuff, but it is overwhelming at times especially with medical issues.

Re: no more storage unit, not a question

My problem right now is where to put LISTED stuff. Auctions no longer seem to be a viable option. I really have no space to take stuff out of boxes, list it, then store it somewhere. Husband says list it for a week at auction then throw it away. He's gung ho to see the stuff go away. I threw him a bone by cleaning out my child's former room to set up a bed in case we ever get a guest (doubtful). I've also cleared out space in the family room for a tree.

Me neither, I feel as if all of the driving back and forth between my home and a storage unit would be a big eater of time and money.

Your mileage will certainly vary.

The best advice I have ever received when it comes to anxiety and stress was to make a mental scorecard of pro and cons of the source of your stress, that is strictly limited to facts (not feelings, just facts).

I imagine your scorecard of the Pros and Cons of getting rid of your storage unit full of unlisted inventory might be:

Pros

  • cost savings on storage unit rental
  • reduced spending on unlisted inventory
  • less incentive to buy slow moving inventory
  • reduced stress about having unlisted inventory
  • more free time
  • happier husband

Cons

  • none

Oh I imagine it was a great deal of work.  But now that is behind you.  You have been struggling with this for a very long time.  The freedom you have now will feel more natural soon.  And with the money you are saving, maybe a little extra to do something fun.

I'd be on your husband's side on this one.  I don't like clutter.  All the stuff I sell is in my office on bookshelves.  My shipping supplies are in my office and the extra I have in another closet.  But none of it invades the main part of the house.  But then I don't sell as much as you do, so easy for me to say.

Why not use the spare bedroom for storage while you work on getting it sold off.  Get it out of other parts of the house.  Merely a suggestion.

Re: no more storage unit, not a question

No, you are right and that's pretty much the plan. Today I pulled out boxes from the family room and will have to find space in the "guest" room prior to listing. My dream would be to list the stuff once or twice at auction and actually sell it but it's  not like the old days. Very few views. And as we all know, most people hate auctions a nd want to buy now. But where to store the stuff waiting on buyers is my problem. It's a constant question of whether the stuff is worth precious storage space (and not for long, either).

Theoretically I could rent a small unit at the facility that just opened a few minutes away and store listed lots in there with regular rotations out. Unlike the former place, I drive right by there a lot. It would be nice to list and remove bulky lots from the house but still have the chance of selling it.

But one thing for sure, NO MORE offsite storage of unlisted stuff. That is the kiss of death.

Oh no, don't do that.  Eventually you'd likely be right back where you were.

IDK about your sales, but the best time for me selling the type of books I sell is AFTER Christmas.  The couple weeks after Christmas are terrific for sale and typically January is my biggest month of the year.  So I'd say, get those listings posted.  All that you can.  Just move the stuff out by selling it.
