Hello
eBay has a new automatic description system.
My question is:
What happens if there's a return claiming "not as described"
with eBay's automatic description?
Thank you.

What happens to you as a seller, you are fully responsible for your listings and its contents which includes the use of eBay's automatic description. So if you are the seller and eBay's automatic description was directly responsible for a return claiming "not as described" then it is your responsibility and potential liability.
Translation: Use at your own risk.

On the River, AI generated listings routinely get rejected before listing for inaccurate description.

"New automatic description system:" Are you referring to using an AI description?
How difficult is it to write your own descriptions, specific to the items, condition and details of the items you're selling?
I consider sellers who use AI and its flowery language that tells nothing about the items to be lazy sellers. JMHO.

In short, it doesn't matter 'who or what' wrote it. It is under your seller ID, so you are responsible.

The OP is referring to the new AI descriptions eBay will adding to listings viewed in the mobile App, over which the seller almost has no control:

I tried the AI descriptions in the past, not the new version, and had to go back to writing my own and being honest with the description. Their AI was like one of the scamming TV commercials.
The AI was a great way to get SNAD returns.

It's meant as a tool to aid you. It does not promise correct or complete descriptions, and you are still fully responsible for verifying the accuracy and editing as needed. I avoid it entirely as it's less work to just write my own descriptions, but I also only describe the condition of an item with rare exceptions, not its purpose or features.

Same problem using the eBay catalog -- so filled with misinformation as to be unusable.
"One size fits all" winds up fitting few -- if any.
Take the time to construct your own authentic descriptions, which are more accurate than any pipe-dream designed by eBay.

Yep, we often do use the results from the eBay catalog when we're listing books with ISBNs or DVDs/CDs with UPCs, but we have to correct a fair bit on the actual listing.

I think the OP is talking about the new system that auto-generates description summaries for mobile listings.
These appear to be done on the fly, and thus the seller does not appear to have any ability to verify the accuracy or edit them.

Oh, yes, I forgot about that. In that case, most of what I said does not apply, though the seller is generally still held responsible for any issues, even though in that case it would not be their fault. I don't like that new "feature" and hope it's quickly removed.

Stick with short, clean, accurate descriptions and you should be fine. There's no reason to let ebay do the writing for you. You can easily convey everything you need to in 2-4 lines as long as your pics are also clean, clear, and accurate.

One of those "Thanks, I hate it" innovations. 😡
