more reason why sales are down

I rarely do promoted listings- mainly because I object to eBay siphoning off more money from me, a TRS.  I pay the price in the end.  My listings appear at the bottom of the Search results and sometimes don't appear at all for a mega number of similar posts.  The result of not purchasing promoted listings is fewer sales- a serious case of "cut off my nose to spite my face" but I don't seem to be able to reconcile my thoughts with promoted listings.

Another reason why my sales are down is because eBay stuffs sponsored items and similar items into my listing pages BEFORE my item description.  I could tolerate this if it were at the end of my listing but I am disgusted with the way it is now.  I realize that eBay can make changes to our listings at any time- it's in our user agreement and we can do nothing about it.  What a crock!

Here's an active case of items that I should have already sold.  I have very fine tableware listed at a very nice fixed price- all with option to make an offer.  I check sales every few days.  I ALWAYS find the exact same items that SOLD at a higher price than mine (including shipping in case you are wondering).  This should not happen ever unless we have an audience of Buyers who don't search for the best buy or don't know how to search for best buy.  My item description, condition, and "returns, payment, postage" as well as my photos and verbiage are TOP-NOTCH both in IMHO and in the opinion of friends who have responded to my request for input on my presentation.  My tableware is UNDAMAGED UNUSED MINT.  Sometimes the items listed as sold are "gently used" or worse.

The eBay strategy to get more money out of me is to put my listings at the bottom of the Search results.  The purpose for this malfeasance is to force me into promoted listings and increase eBay profitability.  I am a TRS since the onset of TRSs and a Seller since 2002.  I also pay for a store.  Seventeen years as a Seller and this is how eBay treats me.  I don't know how they sleep at night.

Thank you for your "rant". I share your sentiments and have stopped using promoted listings. My opinion is that it is an unethical policy, and though it may help some sellers, I believe it is at the cost of other sellers who don't want to participate in this "scam" policy, in particular the smaller sellers. It should be ended immediately as it creates an uneven playing field.

even playing field is relevant........if you don't chose to get on the field....well, not much anyone can do about it......

I hope you feel better!! I am almost to the point with eBay of looking for a catch or money grab on anything they offer.

It's not that I don't want to participate, I can't afford to participate.

While I agree with your rant - I do have one comment on your tableware listing not selling.

I notice that you describe a lot of your vintage items as MINT, undamaged, beautiful, excellent, etc. .  As a buyer I would shy away from vintage items being listed in such glowing terms.

I looked at your listings and searched the four most recent ones you listed:

  •  I searched noritake wellesley bread butter plate under Best Match and yours was #7 out of 15 ... in the top half, not at the bottom.

  •  I searched noritake kensington under Best Match and yours was #6 out of 19 ... in the top third, not at the bottom.

  •  I searched noritake sweet surprise under Best Match and yours was #52 out of 112 ... in the top half, not at the bottom.

  •  I searched noritake pasadena under Best Match and yours was #112 out of 244 ... in the top half, not at the bottom.

more reason why sales are down

I can't understand why my sales are down when I sell very similar sports cards. An example I sold a PSA 9 1989 Michael Jordan, we both started the bids at .99.  I ended up with 3.07 while seller that that are selling 50-60 cards a day are getting $23 on a card that books around $7.  I have trouble understanding this, and I seem to be losing money on all my sales these days. Do some sellers get automatic bids from their friends which bids up the price? My market seems to get worse monthly while sellers taking consignments and selling 50 cards a day are making $20 more on prices.  I could run the item for more days but that and other Specials just seems to make my money for e-bay but not for me. I am ready to stop selling on E-bay as I am paying more for the cards than I can sell them for. I wish I could understand the reasons for this.

It's one more push to get the small sellers out of here.

I have items that sell for a lot more than others.  The only difference I see is my title words are different from theirs.

I can't speak for others but I don't pay attention to sponsored listings.  I tend to search by lowest price with shipping and work my way through.  I only weed out non US listings and depending on category non working or parts only as I want functional items. Sponsored listings only get my attention if they are the best price.  But I understand that it's disheartening to see others being sold when you have a better product.    On the other hand sales have been down for quite a few months.  May was the worst month I've in years and my sales have decreased by 60% this year.  The slide began after GTC went into effect.  I'm hoping that things will begin to pick up in the fall.

I looked at your items. Nice stuff, but I was turned off by the extremely high shipping costs. I know shipping has gone way up but 65 bucks for a 40 dollar item, yikes.

You sell vintage items. I do, too. There are some vintage items almost identical to yours that I've had listed in my store for 3-5 years and no one is buying them even after half a decade. Tried promoting them, creating 20-40% off sales on some items, readjusting keywords, etc. Some of my vintage items literally have not been selling for years and years and years.

This is when I realized that I'll only invest in vintage items if I can get everything for dirt cheap. Went to a yard sale and this lady literally let me walk off with 200 vintage items for a $100 price tag. Okay, fine, 50 cents per vintage item is fine. Even if it's hard to sell and will sit for a while, I can walk away knowing that I didn't invest much in it.

Likewise, I've had some garage sales where I'd buy a bulk amount of really new, hip, in demand items such as electronics, cosmetics, perfumes, video games, etc. and I'd often times have 30 things sell in one day just from those hauls alone - with or without promoted listings. In the past 30 days, I've had 160 items sell via promoted listings, which is fine by me because I give my most hard to sell items a big promotion fee of 10% and will lower everything else to a smaller fee of 5% or so. I've had 300+ items sell in the past 30+ days, so I'm well aware that about half of my sales do come from promoted listings, but seeing as I invest as little as I possibly can in anything, the profit margin is still super high for me even after all the fees. Once you figure that system out, being able to afford promoted listings becomes a great tool.

1) Start shying away from overly saturated and dated categories / items that are hard to sell and no one wants anymore
2) Ignore the advice above if you can get a boat load of hard to sell / vintage items for dirt cheap
3) Find ways to source items from various sources, once again, for super cheap.
4) Once you find various places to source items from for super cheap, figure out what sells and what doesn't sell easily on the Ebay market nowadays
5) Apply a promotional rate on the harder to sell stuff (once again, that you hopefully got for cheap so the extra fees won't hurt your profit margin)
6) (optional) Apply a smaller promotional fee, if you wish, on easier to sell stuff just to speed things along
7) I don't know how or why, but, consistently listing every day helps sales. I'll have days where I'll list some random 20-30 items and that night, some obscure item that I listed four years ago will randomly sell out of absolutely nowhere. Once listed 200 Avon products in one day that I got from a garage sale haul and had some item I listed 5 years ago randomly sell that night. I notice that on days where I list nothing, sales go down. I'll list another 10 or 20 items or so, and bam, once again, some obscure thing that's been in my store for forever will randomly sell.

Gotta keep the Ebay machine well oiled. Consistently list, price check your pre-existing items to make sure they're still well priced, run sales if you must, promoted listings if you must, etc. and that's when you just sit back and watch things fly off the shelves.
