i sold here on ebay for over 16 years, (i loved auctions!) but in ebay trying to be like amazon they have destroyed "THE AUCTION" people can get returns for up to 6 months, people "just dont pay" for items .... i say ebay has killed the one thing ebay had that amazon and other companies did not. it was why so many people LOVED EBAY. they have destroyed that. very sad.

How did eBay "kill the auction"? That "people can get returns for up to 6 months" and "people just don't pay for items" applies to anything on eBay, not just auctions. Many sellers have quit auctions and are doing BIN.
Certain vintage items and rare things can possibly do well at auction, but auctions aren't the best way to go for most run-of-the-mill listings.

It’s not eBay that killed the auction format to try and be more like Amazon, it’s buyers who don’t care for auctions anymore, especially for mass produced stuff. No one wants to wait 7 days to see if they’ve purchases something or not.
As for being able to return for up to 6 months after the sale, you need to take that up with the credit card companies who have had that policy for decades.

eBay didn't destroy auctions, sellers discovered they could sell a lot more at fixed price with possibly higher prices and definitely fewer problems so they stopped using the auction format.
The "trying to be like Amazon" is a ridiculous theory, has been since people started making that comparison (first heard maybe 15 years ago). The only similarities are that they are both online marketplaces targeting consumers.

Not sure what you are talking about. I use auctions all the time and I don't have any problems with them. Every now and then I get a non-payment, but it is actually rare in my categories.
6 months for returns? Are you talking about credit card charge backs? eBay has nothing to do with credit card charge backs.
The key with auctions has always been several things:
1. have an item that is rare and you don't know how high the value might be
2. An item in high demand
3. Something you know will sell but you don't want to promote it to get eyes on it and you afford to sell at the lower auction opening price. (In my case, I just like to get the stuff out the door)
Auctions need at least two people bidding against each other to get higher prices. If you sell something in a low demand area or something that is not rare they will disappoint you.
Good luck

You're Lost. In the past, eBay would charge final value fees upfront, and 6 days to shutdown a non-paying buyer. Today, fees are charged after a buyer pays; and if they don't, only 4 days to zap those buyers. As for Amazonia, just look at what happened to their stock when they reported earnings last quarter vs. eBay's report. Nuff said. eBay has protected the auctions and they are fantastic.

I list a hundred auctions a week and get plenty of sales from it most everyone pays and most are repeat buyers. It totally depends on what you sell and if you have enough followers as to how well an auction would do. But they still work right now 62 auctions have bids for my store. I don't see how people get returns for 6 months if you have a 30 day return policy.

I only run auctions on rare items now. Only thing ebay hurt auctions is not controlling duplicate listings, for fishing lures anyway. There's a dozen plus sellers with duplicate listings for the same lure(color and size), some have the exact same heading, some just put #1, #2, #3 to trick the auto-bots. Market is flooded so auctions are a waste of time. There's a couple that run auctions with 6-8 of the same lures, which is allowed(stupid) but only after the 1st one gets a bid, then the 2nd one starts. WRONG! I see them listed without any bids. When you call into ebay, they say its against the rules and they'll take care of it, nope they don't do a thing.
Sad part is the idiots listing don't understand the meaning supply and demand

You are spot on as usual, some people cant see the forest for the trees. Its called common sense.Especially newbies who presume to know it all.

It wasn't ebay that killed the auction, it's today's buyers that are too impatient and they want their item now. I have had buyers email me 2 minutes after they pay for an item on a weekend to ask when I will ship! Do research and get an idea of what your item is worth. Use that as your buy it now. I only will use an auction if an item is rare.

I also like auctions to move things out, I find it does help the bottom line. I get occasional non-paying bidders but not that many in the bigger scheme of things.
Right now my auction offerings are either non in sync with what people want, or there is too much competition. Without doing the research I assume the site is flooded right now. After the new year this might ease up a bit.

Auctions are alive and well on many other sites. Often with brisk bidding.
If you sell unique or hard to find items where you are unsure of the value, it's the only way to go.
