harassed by an eBay user

This week I was harassed by an eBay user (). He messaged me about the set of proof coins that he had bought from me. He said they were clad not proof and he wanted "what he paid" returned. I could not find anything that I had sold to him. I asked him for the item number, what the set was, and how much he paid for it. He would not give me any information. After several attempts he finally mentioned that it was a set from 1973. I had not sold any sets from 1973. Next, he mentioned that it was a proof set from 2000. Again, it I had not sold any of those either. I finally just told him that without an item number, what the set was, and how much he paid for it I could not help him. Is this an ordinary form of fraud on eBay? Also, I can't report him through eBay because he did not actually buy anything from me or sell anything to me. There does not seem to be a way to report an issue like this.

eBay has an established system for filing a 'Not as described' dispute that any buyer can use to defraud a seller.If this is an attempt at fraud it is a confusing and clumsy one.

@davehermens

If this came through eBay messages you can report and block the ID directly from the message itself.  It can be found in the ACTION tab at the top of the page.

I would not continue corresponding to the person and NEVER give out any of your personal information by corresponding off site.

The buyer also received 'feedback' from a seller with a somewhat similar user name to yours.  Perhaps your buyer is confused.

@davehermensHe may have you confused with a different seller, or have health issues. If he persists, you could make 1 final reply that they would need to open a return on ebay. I would block him after that. If he wasn't abusive, threatening, or using foul language (or any other violation of the ebay rules)  there's really nothing to report him for. I've had a customer message me that they had contacted an attorney and filed a case against us with the atty general in our state. Very confusing as we never sold him anything. When I politely told him that if he opened a return on ebay, it would connect him to the actual seller. He replied "Whatever". I never heard from him again.

Tell him that he made a mistake and stop emailing.  Block him from emailing and from bidding.  He can't do anything to you.  It's his problem if he has an issue with a purchase.
