fraudulent returns

I just got a notice that an item  that I sold, buyer wants to return because they say that it is broken.

Now first of all, I know for a fact that the item functions perfectly. Although my auctions clearly show a no-return policy, Ebay will likely side with the buyer if I don't accept the return. But the thing is.......if I accept the return and the buyer is a scammer and sends back his broken part rather than the new one I sold them, just so they could get it free, what kind of recourse do I have?? Because I believe that is what is going on here. Sure, a seller can report a buyer if that happens.....and maybe the buyer gets a slap on the wrist while the seller is out a lot of money.....plus left with a different item than he sent the buyer. I'm thinking about not allowing a return for fear of that particular scenario. Any thoughts on this?

Re: fraudulent returns

I wonder what's the possibility of Ebay sellers compiling a list and sharing these scammers so they can be blocked or is anyone already doing this? It'd be worth a small annual fee for this valuable information. Scammed of $165 this week.

Some websites already have such lists.

They are worthless.

We can only block 5000 ID's, these lists contain far more names than that.

No one "vets" them.  Anyone can put anyone's ID on them, true or false.

Some sellers may even put their Best buyers on it, so no one else wants to sell to them.

fwiw,

Re: fraudulent returns

" I sell items with serial numbers. That is very helpful when proving the buyer did not send the same item back. I wonder if there is some sort of invisible marker you can use on your items and you can number the items you sell then be sure to make note of that item specific number in your auction. Take a picture of the item with your number on it for your records as well."

eBay doesn't care.
