Now that we have better internet controls like calculated shipping which wasn't available when Ebay started, why don't you just have calculated shipping on all orders and only charge selling fee for the cost of the item. It is unfair that Ebay takes a percentage of the shipping. I know why they did that after about a year in business. People started making the items really cheap and the shipping was double so as to not get a bigger fee. If you make all shipping calculated then the shipping will be the actual shipping and putting the fee only on the item would be fair.

Sellers who offer free shipping would then be paying more in fees than the ‘calculated’ shipping sellers.
Paying fees on the buyers total payment (selling price, shipping and taxes) is the only way, at this time, to level the playing field.

Never thought of it that way. 👍

not everyone ships with "eBay" labels.
I don't do "handling fees" as a separate charge.
In most instances my shipping costs are set to cover my packaging and the eBay fees.
eBay has a bottom line in $$$ they want to make. FVF is set to meet(or exceed) that bottom line.
If the FVF was not charged based on the entire "buyer payment" the FVF %age would be increased to meet that bottom line.

Sellers could just control the calculated shipping by raising the weight or size of package then shipping for listing purposes.

I sell items with low shipping, so I do not want eBay to do that.
That would cause eBay to raise the fee percentage from 13.25% to something like 16% to compensate for the lost revenue.
And sellers who offer free shipping would be even more upset!

To be fair to others;
Many users struggle with calculated shipping these days for various reasons.

Why is it 'unfair'?
Are you against profit? Ebay isn't.
I am not either.
I have a profit margin built in to my shipping charges.
You don't?
I make money on shipping ...
Is that unfair?

They would have to raise the FVF fee on the item to offset what they are no longer charging on shipping. Otherwise they would be losing revenue.

I use fixed price shipping to all locations in the US.
This allows me to "value price" the entire transaction.
It also allows me to break even on the cost and the fees for shipping each month.
I am not interested in calculated shipping which penalizes some buyers based on location, and am not disturbed by the FVF on shipping charges.
There is very little that you are selling, which I would list, if it appeared on my porch.
Different stokes for different folks. What suits your business does not suit mine, and the way I handle my shipping charges has parallels on other Internet marketplaces as well. And many sellers use the same strategy on Ebay as they do elsewhere.
Ebay has been around a long time, and any brainstorm a relatively new seller gets is bound to gore the oxen of a large group of other sellers.

Many sellers don't want to fuss with weight and measurements, especially on lightweight packages. I am one of them.
