ebay's return system is even more broken then ever (automatic return approval rant)

Oh my lord I always knew their return system is pretty broken since day one but recently things had gotten even worse. I don't know what is going on but the system pretty much approve every returns and sellers are eating the return postage cost and I felt like there's nothing I can do to prevent it.

Doesn't fit? Automatically approved!!

Ordered by mistake? Automatically approved!!

Did you set return policy set to "Buyer pay for return shipping"? Yes! Still automatically approved!!
You need to issue an RMA number! Nope still automatically approved!!

Literally tried everything, it's like they are trying be like Amazon by offering free returns but at our expense

I don't know what's going on anymore, at this point might as well just offer free returns and deal with it.

Accepted Solutions

ebay's return system is even more broken then ever (automatic return approval rant)

Check your returns settings, because I have to approve and offer solutions to any NADs that I get.  And yes, people will sometimes file NAD because they don't want to have to pay postage on something that they just changed their mind on.  I had three last year, two were bogus and one was, indeed, my fault.

Free returns don't do much, and there's a reason catalogers are starting to drop them - the returns system is broken everywhere because free really isn't free. All you can do is roll a bit of 'insurance' into your prices.

Buyers have learned to claim NADS and they get their return postage free.

I am disgusted as I just had such a claim because of buyers remores.  She didn't like them but when I said return and pay postage back, whamo, all of a sudden she files a NASD claim.  What is even interesting is that the mark on the item is shows in her claim is not even the same mark that was on what I sent her.  I know I am not going to get back what I sent her and will have to eat it.  Man, that is just wrong.

I don't offer free return shipping because I am a small seller.  When I did I found that many things came back because of buyer remorse, found cheaper price, not what they wanted, or wanted me to give them a cheaper price after purchased.

Okay ya I think I'm supposed to pick what can trigger automatic return and what doesn't in Return Reference. I picked wrong item and defective so hopefully it stops all these automated returns

@chapeau-noir

This information intrigued me, as I have mine set to 'Approve a Return automatically'. When I go to my Return settings, all I have available is 'Send a refund automatically', 'Agree to replace an item automatically' and the one I use. I don't see the option to "have to approve and offer solutions to any NADS that I get", but would certainly love to have that option.

Admittedly, I've only had a couple of remorse Returns this year and no NADS (knock wood)... so I approved/would've approved those anyway. 'Offering solutions' might be nice in some situations. Hmmm... 🤔

You accept returns.

Returns are AUTOMATICALLY approved when you ACCEPT returns.

This has been in the system for well over 5+ years.

I don't understand why you see this as an issue??

Maybe we have different 'experiences' - when the buyer filed for a SNAD, I was presented with the option to accept the return, refund without return or offer a partial refund (I think there was another but I forget).  This was like two months ago or something.

Any non-SNAD returns I have I set up to approve automatically - and I had those two options you mention, if I recall.
