Why is the seller not given the option to close the case?

Had a return request auto approved by ebay on 3/19.

Nothing else has happened since.

Return shows this - We've asked the buyer to ship the item back by Mar 26. Wait until you get the item back before issuing a refund. You should wait until you get the item back before you refund the buyer. Please ensure that you issue the refund within 2 business days of the item being delivered. If the buyer doesn't send the item back by Mar 26 we may close this return.

It's now April 6th - well past the return by date and yet the only options I am given are to Issue Refund, Contact the buyer or Report this buyer.

What is so HARD about giving the seller an option to CLOSE the %$#@ return?

Yes, I KNOW I can call ebay but I shouldn't have to. It's pretty obvious the buyer has no intention of shipping the item back.

Reality is the leading cause of stress.

You should have an option to escalate the request?  All request close out once they become a case and that happens when a request is escalated.

Based on the time lines you shared it will close out without a refund to the buyer and also in your favor.

You can escalate a request in a few different ways

  • From the request details page should be a link
  • Calling in will also escalate into a case
  • Letting the request time out

All will results will have the same outcome based on the info you shared.

A return request will eventually die of neglect, but you can phone eBay and get it closed on the spot if the deadline to return has elapsed.

I agree. You shouldn`t have to call to get it closed. NO reason whatsoever they can`t program the bot to close it automatically when the buyers time is up.

What would happen if the buyer had sent the return but it has been delayed in transit?

Yes I know the tracking for the return label should show as accepted.....BUT....what if the buyer didn't use an eBay provided return label? What if they did use an eBay return label but it hasn't been scanned?

What happens? The same thing that happens to a seller that doesn`t meet the agreed timeframe / tracking requirements when shipping an item........they are out of luck.

Yes there is a reason.  Not all sellers have issues with return and most are willing to work with buyers because they understand the value of buyers.

Five business days or seven days total is the minimum seller have to wait to get an acceptance scan not the maximum.  eBay already has a timed out setting when the buyer does not respond.

If ebay sets posted timeframes as "policy" they should adhere to those timeframes by ending the request when the stated timeframe is over. It`s wrong to set a policy and then deviate from that policy. That`s all I`m saying.

No one said anything about not working with buyers and nothing is stopping a seller from doing so. I don`t need ebay to tell me what is right and what is wrong. I`m actually a grownup with a very good ebay track record. I learned right from wrong long before I started selling on ebay.

The timeframe is pretty clear

@hillbillymedia

Your complaint is that eBay does not have a way to close out return request automatically without seller actions, and that is just wrong.

EBay already has this in place with a timed out setting.  But eBay also gives sellers options to wait longer and work with buyers, or they can manually take action on there own sooner.

I thought you were against eBay taking options away from sellers?

But .... but .... but .... well, you see, then we would have to side with the seller, and, then again, well, the buyer may have had an accident, or, well, the buyer may have gotten delayed, and, then again, maybe the buyer had another party to go to and needed it, or, well, ah, just wait, it will time out, ah, um, someday, well, um, er, maybe .....

Yes, ebay will let the seller take longer IF they call CS and arrange it.  This is a buyer not responding, returning the item or whatever.  You know, AWOL.

"EBay already has this in place with a timed out setting."

And how long is the timeout? The flowchart above I posted states the seller has 5 days yet many have come to these boards complaining that the request remains open long after. So....how long is the timeout and where is the policy for it? I cannot find it.

"But eBay also gives sellers options to wait longer and work with buyers"

I have this option at any point after the transaction no matter if a request is open or closed.

"I thought you were against eBay taking options away from sellers?"

I am against it. I just fail to see how closing a return request in the timeframe ebay states, in the above flowchart, as removing my options as a seller? Why have a timeframe, post it as policy, and then go against the policy? If 5 days isn`t the policy show me and I`ll admit I`m wrong.

  1. 21 days is the time out time frame and yes I have had a few go this long without any issues
  2. I guess I do not understand why you are mad that eBay does not auto close these after five business then
  3. Some sellers might want to give buyers mow time.  I understand buyers just like sellers have real lives and might need more time.  I always have to auto time out in place so it is, not a big deal for me to manually take actions and close these out the first chance I get.

The point is that sellers all work differently and eBay has several options available for sellers to take action or not and still be able to handle this area the way they desire.
