eCheck bounced

So I received a payment a week ago in the form of an eCheck. It was supposed to clear by today.

I just got a notification that he's sent another eCheck (but I never got notification that it was decline or anything like that, I'm assuming what happened was that it bounced, and Paypal tried to withdraw funds again).

This is a high scam item, so if there's a way I can terminate this transaction due to bounced eCheck that would be good.

I've been previously advised I can file an unpaid claim, and if it bounces in a few days (when it's supposed to clear), I'll be able to close the transaction out and recoup my fees.

Recouping my fees isn't high on my list of priorities, resolving the transaction though is.

Paypal still does eChecks?? Hm, maybe I've always been receiving them but turned off any notifications on it just pay attention to ship them when it clears.

Anyway, it sounds like your Unpaid claim seems to be a valid resolution for the transaction. Transaction will be terminated and it'll be as if buyer never bought from you aside from a buyer payment strike. Unless you mean something different than I do with "resolved."

I'd be overly cautious with a high scammed item too.

Yes echecks are just bank account funded payments from an account without a credit card attached as a back up funding source

The indicators on this transaction don't point to scam, it's only what the item is that is making me nervous. I had no reason to think anything was wrong until the eCheck bounced.

It could be resolved by being cancelled, but I don't like to cancel things that have pending payments associated with them because it may try to refund the customer (and good luck with help if that happens). I don't suppose cancelling is the correct way to handle this anyway.

I'm passing information to my business partner for him to decide so if he decides wrong he can share in the loss of the item/payment.

So basically my buyer sent me a payment without funds in his account?

Even if I file a UPI, he could get funds and I might be paid. But all of this is making me feel nervous.

If it was a scam from the beginning and the account will never have money, the UPI would seem like the best solution.

In trouble shooting this scenario... I found out you can't open a UPI because the system sees that he "attempted to make payment". So the item doesn't come up (and it's been a week, so I should be able to open a UPI now).

It also won't let me cancel because there's a pending payment. In Paypal you can't cancel an eCheck someone has sent you, they can just indefinitely send you eChecks and leave your status in limbo.

Have you tried calling the buyer?

I don't contact people outside the platform. There's no reason to be doing that.

Since it's a high scam item, I don't really see what getting reassurance from the buyer is going to do. If they're scamming me, they'll tell me what I want to hear.

Paypal did respond to my message and tell me that an eCheck is only attempted twice before it automatically cancels, but there's no way for the recipient to cancel it.

Not sure if this is related, but awhile ago I stumbled upon a handful of payments I received from buyers that actually bounced back/forth between me and the buyer about 2-3 times before landing on me and sticking. I forget how long this process took. This was like a month after I already sent the items and never heard anything from the buyer (which means everything is peachy). I think I remember asking Paypal about these occurrences only to hear them say "yea it happens. nothing out of the ordinary."

I've had this happen a couple of times - the time when the second attempt bounced I was able to fill UPI because of failure of payment.  Not sure if that is still the case.

I'm crossing my fingers for it to just bounce and be done with it. I'm getting into arguments with the B&M store because they want me to handle this in a way that isn't going to work. They are insistent that it's a scam, and the only scam I can see is to send an eCheck with no money and get free product. Seeing as how I'm not shipping anything without payment, that's not going to happen. The buyer isn't doing any scammy like things (such as pestering me to ship). I'm quite accustomed to scammers and the only thing I have to go on with this is that I got an eCheck that bounced on an expensive item.

I had this happen to me Twice too. PayPal told me they automatically put it through a 2nd time so it’s not the buyer trying again it’s PayPal. On both of mine the 2nd time bounced and I was then able to file for unpaid item. Don’t forget to block them so they don’t try to buy it again.

As you said it may not be a scam. It could be as easy as they had money in their account but a bill cleared they weren’t expecting before the echeck cleared. Until the check clears their bank account the money is still there so it could have been withdrawn from another transaction wiping out the funds they intended to pay you with.

eChecks have never worked out well for me. You are officially in "seller's limbo. I hope for your sake the second try bounces also and you can simply be out a few bucks and move on. If it doesn't bounce again I would be tempted to cancel and take the demerits.

I think Pay Pal will process an echeck twice.

Scammers will use an echeck hoping the seller doesn't notice it hasn't cleared and go ahead and ship the item.

Legit buyers also use echecks and sometimes the funds don't clear their bank before the echeck comes through and will bounce the first time.

Have a great day.
