Did you mean:

eBay won't help. Can you?

I attempted to sell four car wheels in late May. I had a willing buyer\ and I shipped the wheels, and that's where the fun started. The buyer refused delivery because the post office wanted an additional $380 in postage. That's on top of the combined $300, split evenly, the seller and I had already contributed to the shipping cost. I had gotten faulty advice from an eBay rep on how to prepare the shipment, which is what led to the breakdown. To this day eBay refuses to accept responsibility.

A week after the refund was issued, another  eBay member who had come forward with a lowe offer the same day the shipment went out (I naturally just ignored it) filed a dispute claiming he was due a refund. WHAT?!?! I laughed to myself over the guy's nerve. Today came news that eBay had sided in his favor and they're preparing to take money from my bank account to fund his refund.

I'm beyond myself trying to comprehend how something this outlandish to happen. You can't reach a live human being at eBay, they refuse to pay attention to the facts and I'm about to be frauded out of $466 of my hard-earned money. Is there recourse for something like this? I certainly can't trust eBay to answer that.

I have no qualms with the second buyer being refunded. He deserves to be refunded. But they're charging me a transaction fee and shipping fee for items that never shipped. That's crazy.

"They" aren't charging you the shipping fee for the item(s) that weren't shipped. USPS (or whoever you purchased the shipping labels from) charged the fee for the labels you purchased through ebay.

If something wasn't shipped, you need to go in and void the labels. After 2-3 weeks, USPS will see that the labels weren't used and the credit will be posted to your account.

The FVF charges won't be credited because ebay had to step in to refund the buyers, so that's on you.

@ufgator1978

"Ebay never released any of the funds to me. They needed proof of my SS. The initial sale got stopped over the  shipping issue before I had a chance to respond."

If you never provided eBay with your Social Security number, and eBay never released any of the funds to your account, this complicates manners even further.

You may possibly be receiving notices from a collections agency in the near future for unpaid funds that are due eBay, as well as an IRS form 1099-K for any profits over $600.00, due to the two sales that show up on your account.

At this point, you need to contact an American eBay agent at eBay Facebook for Business, at  https://www.facebook.com/eBayForBusiness

I was aware I had made a mistake on the shipping. I had four boxes to ship and only one label. I went to considerable trouble to get a live human being on the line and ask: Does this look right to you? I can't use the same USPS label on all four boxes, can I? Have I made a mistake?

He put me on hold and two minutes later said, go ahead and send them with one shipping label. I did and I've lived to regret it. eBay acts as if that conversation did not take place.

Here is the problem...
Ebay places the responsibility for shipping on the seller, so at this point no matter what ebay tells you, it is your responsibility and that is even if they give you bad or false information. This may be a hard lesson to learn but it is like this across the board, welcome to the world of self-employment and business ownership.

That said those wheels had to have sold twice for there to be a refund issued to the extra buyer.
Perhaps you can go through your sold items to see if that happened, and whether you got paid because chances are you're only refunding money you were paid for an item that was never sent out.

Re: eBay won't help. Can you?

I'm not sure you read the entire description of what occurred with the shipping. I contacted Ebay by phone and spoke to a representative. I brought to his attention that I had four boxes to ship but that that Ebay had provided only one shipping label. I even questioned him when, after being put on hold several minutes so he could contact the Ebay shipping department, he came back on the line and advised to reproduce the one label three more times for the other boxes to be shipped. Who's responsible there? It shouldn't be me.

What makes you think I didn't? I read them all.

Re: eBay won't help. Can you?

There's a LOT going on here but there is some additional information needed that may provide some additional insight. First it appears you sold the wheels twice according to your sold items and the post responses. The first sale was on the 27th and from post responses appears to be the one you actually shipped the wheels to. The second was on the 28th which appears to be a buyer that used the BIN option and paid you for the wheels. I am not sure where the other buyer was that you said submitted a low ball offer that you ignored. If that is the case it probably does not factor into the problem since you never accepted and the offeror never paid.

I suspect the buyer on the 28th is the one that filed the dispute. Did that buyer actually file a claim with eBay or did they open a chargeback with their CC company? If they opened a case what was the reason? I suspect item not received since you never shipped the item to that buyer, obviously. How did you respond to that case, or did you? Is that item still showing in your seller hub as sold and pending shipment? Either through an eBay glitch or your error, it doesn't really matter, you needed to address that sale. If you did not and the buyer filed an INR after 4 days they probably asked eBay to step in and of course they ruled in the buyers favor and will issue the buyer a full refund and still charge you the FVF's.

I am not sure of the status of the funds from either sale, again information we cannot see but based on one of your other responses it appears these funds may have been on hold due to your not having provided eBay with your SSN and/or other information.

With regards to the actual sale and shipping issue based on the listing it appears you were using calculated shipping and shipping the items USPS ground advantage. You are in Tarpon Springs, FL where was/is the buyer located? Not sure what you had for the dims and weight in the listing but box for 1 wheel, based on listing information, would have been about 22" x 22" x 12", guessing at weight of 14 pounds. Shipping one wheel from your location to my location in VA would be about $84 retail rate. Not sure where you got the $300 and what you mean by "split evenly" between you and the buyer could you explain more about how you did that.

The reputation of eBay's first line customer support is abysmal these days. While it is possible to ship more than one package using the same label there are USPS rules regarding how you ship 1 of 4, 2 of 4, 3 of 4 and 4 of 4 boxes in a single shipment. Using the same label, which was probably for the shipment of 1 wheel, is of course going to result in underpayment of the postage.

You mentioned the buyer refused the shipment. Were the wheels returned to you and did you have to pay the additional postage? You also mentioned you refunded the buyer. Did the buyer open a case with eBay and if so for what reason or did you unilaterally refund the buyer? You mentioned the figure of $466 that you are about to loose can you be more specific as to how that breaks down?
