eBay charged me $86 fee on top of UPS shipping cost of $488. They rendered no service. Why?

First concur with katzrul15 some really cool planes. Your post is missing some key information so not sure which plane, out of the ones you sold, this refers to. However the eBay FVF is applied to the entire transaction (item price + shipping + sales tax) + .30 If I use the following item you sold as an example and figure it sold to a buyer where there is a 6% sales tax then the FVF would be calculated as follows.
FVF calculation basis ($270 + $381 + $39.06) = $690.06
FVV - (12.9% * $690.06) + .30 = $89.31.
I am guessing the $86 was your FVF and the difference in my calculation is based on a different sales tax rate for the buyer. What you actually pay for the shipping is irrelevant to eBay's FVF calculation and while the UPS shipping label may have been cheaper through the eBay label process UPS is infamous for tacking on charges and eBay unilaterally pays those out of your funds.
If you are going to use UPS you may want to checkout a third party shipper like Pirate Ship that has similar discount rates to what eBay has. Even using that method I would still take the package to the UPS store to get a scanned receipt and to have the UPS person validate the postage is correct based on the size, weight and destination of the package. I don't use UPS often but when I have there has been a considerable difference between what I can get the label for through Pirate Ship and what the UPS store charges over the counter and I have never been hit with a surcharge.

When you post a question or ask for help here, you're not addressing eBay or its employees.
So the term "Your statement . . ." doesn't apply.

They are really, really neat planes. Salty to ship, but really neat planes.
@gittguy - @dbfolks166mt has done an excellent job detailing all this for you. Hope it helps for future items that you might sell here. No wonder they all sold so quickly - your Buyers got amazing deals on the shipping it appears!

As you've already read the fee is on the total of the transaction. What if you sold the plane for $1 and charged $700 shipping. Would you only pay 12 cents fee to Ebay? With that said if you intend to make more profit for now on your have to add the asking price, shipping cost, and buyers state tax together before calculating fees.

Did you pay retail for shipping? Ouch.

eBay is asking me if this is an acceptable solution. It is neither.

Sorry - not sure I am understanding? Acceptable solution to what exactly?

You now know the the UPS Store charges NEARLY DOUBLE what you can buy the same postage for on ebay (or pirateship, or a multitude of other postage options)
ouch is right.....in fact, I "think" the largest box at 35.1 pounds coast to coast for 'standard' shipping is

Some of those planes may have had oversize charges. What was the wingspan of the slope soarers?

I bet he both paid retail and paid them to pack it. I can ship a 300 pound arcade game cheaper than what was paid for that plane.
