How common is the requirement to upload a copy of your ID to eBay? I got that one this morning. I thought it was bogus because the email only had my first name (and it could be anyone who received email from me, which only has my first name in the "from" field), but then it was in eBay messages and the notification is appearing at the top of the payouts screen.
I uploaded a copy of my passport this morning. They wanted the information by January 2023... but why wait. I've had a copy of my passport scanned for these types of issues for a long time. I had a scan of my driver's license too but it's merged into a word document and they want picture files.
Just wondered if something happened to get them to ask for this, or if it's a regular thing. When I went to the page to fill out the information it was defaulting to USA for the citizenship and issuing ID (I guess they need proof that I'm not a USA citizen for tax purposes?)

I gave it to them. I didn’t like it, but I did it.
I think its born from 9/11. Before 9/11 you could open a bank account on the phone or with minimal ID. After 9/11 they changed the banking rules, maybe FDIC, and now opening a bank account requires a mile of identification. I think the managed payments put them under some banking rules that require the ID.

If you search this board for "drivers license" or "photo ID" you will find hundreds and hundreds of posts on the topic. S I would gather is is fairly common.

You will probably never know. It is clearly a security measure, and if eBay explained what triggers their security measures it would just give bad actors information that would help them avoid the security measures.

Good to know. I've read here in the forum people being asked to provide copies of their ID and saying they got restricted after that. It makes me wonder if the OP in these threads did something that attracted attention, or if there's some very high level of scrutiny that I don't know about yet.
When I went to fill in the information my country of residence was there as Canada and greyed out, so at least they've got my residence right for tax purposes.

I was just asked to provide a photo ID, for the first time, in July of this year. I had read on another thread that when you upload it, it's best to retype your other information as well. I did all that and haven't had any problems since, so, it's just the new way of doing business. I guess they don't respond to you if everything went fine. The only thing I noticed is that all the prompts to update it disappeared from my seller hub. You need it to sell on any marketplace now, it seems.

And on other sites, we are periodically prompted to update/verify nothing has changed.
It comes across a little harsh - e-Bay could do better communicating the process/parameters.

its for tax purposes as some people what to avoid the IRS due to the last year rules on the 1099K form. Give it to them and be done with it. Least you want its the IRS sanction you later due to tax "evasion" depending on the context.

It is pretty 'routine' and will continue to be (updating)
eBay is required by law to:
KYC means Know Your Customer and sometimes Know Your Client.
KYC or KYC check is the mandatory process of identifying and verifying the client's identity when opening an account and periodically over time.
In other words, ebay must make sure that their clients are genuinely who they claim to be.
Online platforms that process funds may refuse to open an account or halt a business relationship if the client fails to meet minimum KYC requirements.
KYC process includes ID card verification, face verification, document verification such as utility bills as proof of address, and biometric verification.
Facilitators must comply with KYC regulations and anti-money laundering regulations to limit fraud. KYC compliance responsibility rests with the platform.
In case of failure to comply, heavy penalties can be applied.
In the U.S., Europe, the Middle East, and the Asia Pacific, a cumulated USD26 billion in fines have been levied for non-compliance with AML, KYC, and sanctions-fines the past ten years (2008-2018) - let alone the reputational damage done and not measured.

The thing is... the IRS doesn't care about me. (Well actually they do because I have a US bank account, I had to fill a W8-BEN and foreign status documents, provide a copy of my driver's license for proof of residency and passport for proof of citizenship).
I'm registered on the .com site, so I get treated often as a US seller, but they seem to be aware my country of residence is Canada and are not requiring an SSN/ITIN, but they did ask for my SIN (which is the Canadian SSN). It said when I signed up for MP that providing an SIN is not mandatory, but my sales would be very interesting to Revenue Canada if I wasn't reporting them, so giving them the info they ask for seems best to keep selling here.
I've been paying taxes on business since 2005, and prior to that the business was in my partner's name and taxes were paid by him. We've never evaded taxes with our businesses, and in Canada if your business is profitable after expenses, you're allowed further deductions on "use of home" expenses, so I can write of heat, hydro, mortgage interest, property taxes, maintenance fees, etc. So having a business reduces how much of my personal funds pay these things, as I work full time (and pay taxes on that too).

I'm not complaining. I don't actually care if eBay has a copy of my passport for their files. What I was upset about was thinking there was actually something wrong with my account and I was going to end up suspended after providing them what they were asking for (like I read in these forums). I have been telling myself that in most cases there's way more to the story than is being told, and those seller's experiences don't apply to me.
