Among other things, eBay needs to ensure that once an auction has closed (item sold), only the buyer can communicate with the seller in the pages of that ended auction. Swappa does it so eBay should be able to. Here's why: I sold an item today within 5 minutes of selling it the buyer messaged me from the sales page and requested to cancel the sale (This was a buy-it-now listing) I refunded the buyer and did an auto relist. Within minutes, the listing sold (again). Within minutes of the second sale, the first buyer asked me "why did you cancel the sale? "I replied "You requested I cancel. " They replied, "No I didn't". So then I went back to the message for the cancellation and it turned out to be a competitor of the buyer that messaged me (from the original sale page) "posing" as the buyer. I never thought to look at the I.D. of where the message came from It simply said, "Please cancel this sale, I changed my mind". Long story short, I had to refund the second buyer, relist again for the first/original buyer to purchase the item. Needless to say, the second buyer was upset. BTW, the second buyer was not the one to request I cancel the original auction, but who knows, he could have been in cahoots with that person. eBay, close the loop on sale pages so only buyer and seller can communicate within that sale page.

I have not heard of that before. That is pretty underhanded. But like you said if you took the time to look at who it was you would have caught it. I do not think this happens enough for ebay to change policy. You just need to be more aware of who your replying to.

Terrible idea. I have frequently had potential buyers message me from sold listings to ask if I had any more for sale. This lets me know that there is interest in that particular item so that I can try to acquire more.

This. I am not a high volume seller at all, but last time I did a clear out and sold some old gun stuff, I had exactly this happen.

Exactly. I once picked up a few Christmas ornaments on sale from a local store and listed them... after they had sold, I got a message from a buyer asking me if I had any of the unicorn variant of the ornament in stock since their own local branch of that store was sold out of that one and it wasn't available online. I didn't have any at the time, but since I lived right near the store where I had purchased them, I told the buyer that I would go see if I could get some for them. I was able to get the unicorns and make a special listing for that buyer, they purchased them, and everyone was happy. I made a sale that I wouldn't have made otherwise if the buyer hadn't been able to message me.

You made a mistake and it's Ebays fault because you didn't check the ID's.
What if you got more then one of the item to sell?

I don't think ebay needs any more restrictions on communication.
I guess some kind of popup message warning about scams could be implemented to help new and infrequent sellers navigate the messaging system. I wouldn't be against that.

Sorry, but this is not a ebay problem. This is a seller error.
You surely don't expect ebay to not allow members to send other members messages unless they are involved in a transaction with them?
