I sold a $225 item.
Buyer gets it, claims something on it doesn't work.
I walk him through some stuff to check, he refuses.
As buyer to call manufacturer for help, he refuses.
The issue with the item is really simple, but I can't be much help without seeing it.
Buyer asks eBay to return, they grant him his wish (what else do you expect?).
Buyer sends the item back in an oversized box, with 5 paper bags wrapped around it.
Item is caved in, dented, and now tore up to bits.
Call eBay, they literally ask me "get the buyer to admit he didn't use enough packaging".
Yes, eBay wants you to play detective with the buyer..
So they said "only other thing is to contact the post office".
For whatever reason, the return was shipped back with only $50 insurance!
So now what? I can't use an insurance claim because there is no insurance.

Has the buyer already been refunded?

Yes, buyer already has been refunded.

Your insurance claim would be denied anyway, due to poor packaging.

So then who is liable?
Buyer waited an entire month before hooking it up, waited until the last day before making a case, sounds like classic "remorse".
eBay failed to insure the item.
If USPS won't accept a claim due to eBay's lack of insurance, then someone needs to pay up.
If I pay money to insure, then eBay needs to as well.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but its all over with except the crying. There is zero can be recovered on a return due to buyer improperly reboxing a item. They show no concern at all about protecting a item on the return shipping because they know ebays going to refund no matter what...

Then why isn't eBay including insurance on their returns?
If it's an option, I would take it, I would of paid for it too.

eBay is only a venue.
They force the sellers to do all the things that could cost money.
free returns? Seller pays for that.
Damaged item? Seller pays for that.

Thats a question ask to ebay employees hundreds of times they never answer just refer you to their CS support. Even if they had insured it the claim would have been denied due to improper packaging. The refund should have been left hanging until your item arrived back and inspected and once damage noted refund denied and buyer told to recover their funds from the insurance claim.....

In my way of thinking ebays at fault and should issue you a complimentary refund, but due to dollar amount involve the odds of that happening are slim...

You should have sent a call-tag.
As the purchser of the return label, you assume risks of damage in transit - federal law and eBay policy.
Sellers assume all risks associated with selling. As is normal business practice, use expenses to write down profit on your taxes.

Because, as you were told twice, the insurance claim would be DENIED due to the poor packaging.

THIS!
It used to state this, but when an item arrives, the ONLY option is to refund.
eBay sucked the money right out of my checking account once the item was on my door step.
It could of been a bunch of bricks for all they cared.

This is how the box arrived.
