eBay dances to their own drummer, and sometimes they don't stay in tune.

The fees are too high. I just sold an item for $45 + $8.07 shipping. My fee rate was 15% for some reason... 15%!!! I swear it feels like the fee goes up every time I sell something. My order earning was $36.08. I was hoping to get at least $40 or close to it and was pretty surprised to see what it actually came out to be. It needs to be 10% across the board.

It is often too much work for a micro seller to sell on Ebay for the profit you make.
I am not a huge seller, but I am large enough to save time and money by buying packaging materials which are suited for what I buy making packing a quick process. I use my existing listings as templates for similar items. And I own the equipment to generate product images with minimal effort.
Gives me time to goof off by posting on this forum.

I just adjust my prices so the buyer covers for it. Yes, many inexpensive items don't have much headroom and many of my small guitar parts have been priced out. I don't blame ebay for that. How low could their fees be and till operate? I have a much bigger issue with postal rates going up constantly.

They're tone deaf and couldn't find a beat with a map and a flashlight and a hearing ear dog.
But we knew that.

The fees on shipping and tax throws those rates off. Heavier packages and more expensive shopping option equal a higher percentage rate. Ideally the posted percentage rate would apply to free shipping and a no tax state. But of course the 30 cent transaction fee plays havoc with those small transactions

Actually I don't pay a penny in eBay fees OR shipping costs. So I don't care what the rates are. If you are bothered by the rates you are doing it wrong.

In other words you were guessing at a selling price. If you wanted to net $40 you should have accurately calculated your total costs in which case you should have sold it for around $49.00

That's exactly correct! FVF in the handbags category are 15% just as advertised and just as you agreed to:

What are you comparing them to in order to determine they are too high?

The FVF rate you pay will depend on what category you are selling in. Most categories are 13.25% but there are some that are 15%.

We paid a 30 cent transaction fee when we had PayPal processing our payments. After all this time I think it should be reasonable to expect sellers to be use to this fee. It most certainly isn't new.
All similar sites charge their FVFs on shipping. Sales tax, well I know Amazon and Etsy don't. Not sure about other sites.
Free shipping shouldn't matter in the FVF calculation. The seller has to add the cost of shipping into the price of their product, so the FVF is essentially the same as if they did shipping separately.
