I just paid $138.00 in fees for a $900.00 sale. That is more than 15% , so I must have been charged fees on shipping. That is unethical when a company is taking 15% of the sale. I could have sold the item on consignment for that amount and the retailer would have packaged and shipped the item. It had been a few years since I sold an item on eBay, but I will never post another expensive item on eBay. The only reason eBay cuts sellers of guitars a break is because Reverb is eating their lunch in that marketplace. I had thought about putting a few guitars up for sale, but they are going to Reverb after this ripoff. In my humble opinion, eBay should not be taking 15% from sales of $500 or more.

eBay has been basing the final value fee on the buyer's entire payment, including shipping, since 2011.

eBay does charge a lower FVF percentage for sales above certain thresholds, which vary from $1000 to $7500 depending on the category:

Ebay has the right to set their fees..........sellers need to understand what they are before they list...... and if sellers think fees are too high........they have the right NOT to list.

Some sellers were shifting the item cost into the shipping to save on selling fees. That had to be " squashed "

I’d love to know more about these consignment places that will take the risks associated with selling big ticket items, list, sell and pack for only 15%…

Perhaps you should have read the readily available information regarding fees.

Just out of curiosity - if you had made this same $900 sale on Reverb what exactly would you have paid in fees to them?

"In my humble opinion, eBay should not be taking 15% from sales of $500 or more."
In my humble opinion, infrequent eBay sellers of any item priced at $900.00 should know eBay's fee structure before they press the List It button.
eBay's Final Value Fee percentage is applied to the total price paid by your buyer, which probably includes sales tax as well, possibly even sales tax on the amount of shipping charges paid by the buyer.
eBay does retain a lower Final Value Fee percentage in some categories when the price is into the thousands of dollars, not just the relatively small $900.00.

So it's unethical that your credit card charges fee's to your grocery store when you use it? Or when you did all your Christmas shopping this year at various different stores that get charged fee's? If you're going to call eBay unethical then you better wrap in all of the payment possessors, interest charged on CC's etc... That's all in any terms & conditions/user agreements that we all read and accept prior to using.
eBay did nothing wrong, YOU accepted all of those prior to selling here.
If you knew you would make more money sending it to a consignment shop, then why not just do that in the first place? Since you accepted all the terms & conditions and knew exactly what the fee's were before selling an item on here.

I can answer that.
They pay 8.19% to include shipping, plus $0.49.

"If you're going to call eBay unethical then you better wrap in . . . interest charged on CC's etc... "
Now, those are -- if not unethical, they show absolutely blatant corporate greed !!
And yet millions of Americans apparently happily incur them every day . . . .

This board, stocked with eBay shills, is not the place to complain about the fees. You'll just get the same pile of boilerplate replies that everyone else gets here.
If you have another site that sells for less fees and you find it to be superior to eBay, you should take your message to a wider audience. If you are a user of social media, make it known there. Friends, family, anyone who may have an interest in selling guitars or other musical gear, be sure to let them know how much of a better value it was for you to sell on a different site.
If enough people spread the word and begin to feel this way about eBay, there are a few possible outcomes, but the best two are:
1) eBay is financially pressured to offer better rates (probably never going to happen)
2) Other site will grow, gain more buyers and possibly become the go-to place to buy and sell musical equipment

My comments to you are:
1-Use of this platform is voluntary.
2-All fees are clearly stated; it is the responsibility of all users to read the conditions.
3-This is business; e-Bay is a facilitator, not your buddy.
4-Greed, being defined as an intense desire for, among others things, money, is a foundation of most successful businesses.

Reverbs about a 9% fee on total which from what I recall is like 5% FVF and 4% card processing, something like that. We've a music shop just down the road who sells there but his retail does better than Reverb last I knew, also teaches music.

It isn't just the 15% cheaper eBay rate that should be the difference maker, considering the time, effort, nonsense, and stress involved with selling on eBay.
15% selling it through eBay versus 30 or 40% selling it through a consignment shop or a consignment auction, I'll take the consignment place every day, any day of the week.
