confused about local pick up

I do not have local pickup on my listings. Yesterday a guy who won an auction asked to pick up and I sent an invoice with free shipping. Then today another guy emailed to ask if he can have local pick up on an auction with no bids. 

 

I should know this - but I really don't - is it enough to ebay to have Payment Received updated on the transaction or do we need some sort of proof of mailing with a tracking number? What about Marked as Shipped?

Local pickup should be easier.

We have more people requesting it.

I am never Clear giving advice on eBay.

But, marked local pickup, the buyer should recieve a confirmation number.

(I have never bought on local pickup, so...)

That number, given at pickup is confirmation.

We only go through PayPal so don't know about cash.

its sticky, as so much with eBay can be.

Hopefully someone will come along with better info, but with the new community page & the way issues fall now....

I googled it and found an ebay article about local pickup that talked about ways to prove delivery so there is no INR claim. But it didn't talk about proof of mailing or tracking. I seem to have read here about gyrations like sending the customer some piece of mail that has a tracking number on it.

Just did this yesterday and I don't know about all the razzmatazz gyrations.  My situation might be a little different, in that, buyer paid on eBay and selected Free Local Pick Up.  We met and I gave him the items.  I came home and marked the items as shipped.  He went home and we both left feedbacks.  Done deal.

Instead of free shipping you should have changed the shipping method on the invoice to local pickup. There’s nothing you can do about that now so you’ll have to manually mark it as shipped and hope the buyer doesn’t file an INR claim.

As another member has provided links to eBay's local pick up policies, eBay has a solution when buyer selects local pick up during checkout. But it most likely doesn't apply to what actually happens. When seller offers both free shipping and local pickup, there is no incentive for buyer to select local pick up during checkout without knowing seller's location and availability.

 

One of the appeals of a peer to peer marketplace is its flexibility. But the existing order fulfillment policy isn't flexible enough to allow users to make changes to delivery method, even if both seller and buyer realize pick up/drop off makes more sense. 

 

Before there is a solution, to cover yourself as a seller mark the item as shipped and have the buyer leave you a positive feedback upon pick up. EBay recognizes positive buyer feedback as proof of transfer of goods and services.

I read the articles already and they talk about avoiding an INR claim. But my question is whether ebay expects some sort of tracking to prove the transaction was completed.

Get a signed receipt when you deliver it. I've never had a problem.

If you didn't have local pick up as an option originally be sure to tell the buyer that the cost for local pick up is going to be the same or more than leaving it as is.  I sold an item to someone that lives less than two miles from me last week.  He didn't ask and I didn't offer local pickup.  I mailed it yesterday (Sunday) so he should have it today or tomorrow since he lives less than a mile from the post office.

 

I don't let the customer direct me on how to change my sales routine on the fly.  You shouldn't either.  It costs you time, gas and perhaps Covid safety to meet people you don't know right now.

Actually it is a policy violation to ask for something not offered in a listing.  This can be a problem for you because you didn't offer local pickup in the listing.  You have to add the option so the buyer can select it.  I had a buyer in January who wanted to purchase three of my items and wanted to pickup.  Therefore I added the local pickup option to those listings.   They had to pay immediately because our state collects sales tax on internet purchases.  When using local pickup the buyer receives a six digit code that they have to provide you when they pickup to prove they received their purchase.  If you let them pick up and don't have any proof the buyer could make a claim for an item not received and win.  Actually when they arrived that code and the QRS codes weren't working so I contacted eBay gave them the buyer's six digit code I still had to mark them as shipped.

Strange, I have had several requests lately for local pickup.

I usually end the listing & relist as local pickup, requesting payment through PayPal.

Or just edit to local pickup. 

Never knew that was a no.

Me either.

I think it's harder for a buyer to look you in the eye & then rip you off.

You are then a person, not a faceless corporation.

I much prefer being a human.
