A few weeks ago I got a message from ebay telling me to offer free shipping as more buyers are asking for it. I changed some of my listings to free shipping. This past Saturday I got another message from eBay telling me that I should offer express shiping for the holiday season as buyers are likely to shop elsewhere where express shipping is an option. Does ebay expect me to offer free express shipping? What is wrong with them?

I think there’s a list somewhere.

Yes.
It's the price of doing business, not-for-profit, on ebay.

I think most of us have received these dopey messages from eBay. I like to read them as they lend credence to my preconceived notion that eBay doesn't know squat about what I sell, even less about what I may be interested in buying and hasn't shown much evidence they're interested in my success as long as they get paid.

Just take those messages and consider if they will work for you.
Not all buyers have to have free shipping or express shipping.

Sometimes it's possible to make some sense out of eBay's ridiculous messages. In this case, you could offer Priority Express as a second shipping option for buyers who are willing to pay for it -- IF you are willing to make the effort to get to the PO in time.

They send these to everyone. Take down the free shipping and no way do you want to listen to there messages. Be careful or you will be giving your items away for free. Don't pay attention to them. Do whats right for your business. Only you know if you can list an item with free shipping. If you are I hope your raising the cost of your items to offset the cost of shipping.....................

What's worse?...losing a $5 profit sale due to price, or losing $15 on shipping due to a sale?

There's no contradiction here, really ...
You can offer more than one method of shipping in your listing.
My listings have two options:
Priority (free)
Priority Express (not free)
Buying and Selling since 2013
