May be the buyers first buy on eBay. The buyer is not communicating or paying. I set the cancel settings to my listings if the buyer doesn't pay in 4 days. The buyer has 0 feedback and 0 buys/sells on the account. The account was made last month. I contacted the buyer explaining where to check for help with payments on eBay. Nothing, no response. Do I have to initiate the cancel? What is the point of the cancel in x days setting if it is not automatic?

EBay has shortened the period for Cancellation of Unpaid Items.
Until recently sellers had to wait 96 hours (48 for US-based sellers) to open and Unpaid Item Dispute, then another 96 hours to allow the buyer time to react.
Six to eight days.
Now that period has been reduced to 96 hours start to finish, if the Seller chooses the new Automatic Cancellation.
The deadbeat still gets a Strike and any fees are refunded.

I allow 7 days for payment. After that, without communication, cancelled.

It is better than it use to be. Until recently, the seller couldn't open a UID until after 48 hours and the buyer got another 96 hours to pay before the seller could close the dispute. The only way to avoid non-paying or slow paying customers is to use only fixed price listings and require immediate payment. That means that you can't entertain offers either.
Oh! It also plays havoc with combined shipping.

DId you set the automatic cancellation up properly?
In future to have eBay automatically cancel your transactions due to non-payment:
Go here: https://www.ebay.com/Cancel/Preference/UnpaidPurchase
Slide the button to the left to turn it on / off or you can change the timeframe.
I have been imported from Australia and this is my posting ID

You can cancel on the 5th day ... or give them more time.
Reason for cancellation: Buyer did not pay.
Or set up auto cancel.
It might also be a good idea to block that buyer.

4 days is your idea of "so long to pay"?
After 96 hours of nonpayment, you can cancel, citing non-payment as the reason.
If you want it to happen automatically, you have to set it up that way with eBay.

How do I block a buyer? I don't mind blocking one who does not pay and has no feedback.

Yes 96 hours seems like a long time to me. Especially with a new account, no feedback, no communication.

How much feedback did you have when you started out on eBay?

Hi @mcm_outlets
The earliest you can cancel is after 4 full days (96 hours) have passed. You said you "set the cancel settings" ... so eBay should be cancelling for you automatically.
As for why buyers get so long to pay ... well, the time has been reduced significantly over the years. Buyers used to get as long as 14 days to pay before they could be given a nonpayment strike ... so narrowing it down to 4 days seems pretty good.

...believe me...with behavior like his, he will find himself being blocked from purchasing from not only you, but from many of us who set their buyers preferences at having no more than [2] unpaid item strikes within the last [12] months.
I have mine set at [3] UPI's and believe me...it works like a charm!
You will have your revenge...unfortunately, you just cannot see it in action.

This is 100% more communication than I have with this buyer. If he messaged me this question or anything really, I wouldn't cancel. Just wondering what others did in the position. Not wondering how much feedback I started with. Not even sure the records were electronic when I started, I think they used stone tablets back then.
