I'm a nano seller, with only 100+ items. For the entirety of December, 2021, I picked a few, 4 to be exact, higher-priced items to test water this Promoted Listings Advanced. I set my daily budget at $10. According to my math, if I'm to spend $300 on promotion, I need to sell $1200 - $1500 to break even. After one month, I'm even too embarrassed to tell you how much sales I made.
Actually, this promotion policy is not new, it's been employed by other online marketplaces as well. I've tested water there too. But it's always the same, I can't make enough sales to cover the cost. So, I'm wondering, in order for this to be actually beneficial for the sellers, what do sellers have to do? What kind of sellers can actually make money from this? Like, Mega Sellers? Or, very high-priced items? I mean, if eBay is mimicking other websites, then that means this must be good for them, and supposedly is also good for sellers too. But who?
What are you experiences? And your thoughts? Thank you.

Can't speak from experience as I have never used PL of any flavor.
I do wonder how a seller can profit from a system (PLA) designed to charge him every time a buyer clicks on his listing. Seems like eBay is going to be the only party making money off this scheme. One man's opinion.

Yes, some sellers do well with this. I don't think you have to be a "mega seller" to do well with this. But the very first thing to ask yourself is: How beneficial will it be for me to have the top spot on the Search Results page?
For example, I sell single quantity, used/vintage, lower dollar, long tail items---generally not a lot of them listed, and generally not a high demand item. If a buyer conducts a fairly narrow search, my item will likely show up on the first page of search results, and, due to condition variations, etc, buyers are likely to look beyond the top item. So, for me, I see no reason to use PL Advanced. I simply don't need that top slot.
I don't know what sort of stuff you sell, but from the sound of it, you've tried this, and even though presumably you got the top spot in some cases, getting the top spot did not yield enough sales dollar volume to make it worthwhile. It's possible that you would have had similar sales result even if you were lower on the page. I suspect you are either paying too much per click , or you are paying for items that don't require the top spot.
But yes, some sellers are doing very well with this. But it definitely isn't for everyone.

I used PPC style promotions on Etsy (same as eBay is touting here) and found it high-speed wallet emptying. I think they work best with individuals who have the kind of commodities everyone else is selling and want to vie for a top spot. I use regular PLs and have since they came out - I'm finding I have to raise the percentage rate, though, as the site gets increasingly crowded and buyer base shrinks/ages out - I use PL as a game of odds and rarely pay trending rate but do have to take on a bit more.

Makes sense. Just to share my thoughts: Being at the top spot can help for me, but it can hurt too! You see, I sell fishing gear, brand new and not unique. When people go out to buy a new fishing rod, even when they have a brand or some specifics in mind, they still shop around. Click here and there, just to see what's out there. So, I get exposures, which may turn into sales in the future, but not necessarily actual sales today. For mega sellers, this is like branding, just keep doing it and let people know you're there, and one day, money will come. But for me, I can't, branding is not for me and I need immediate results. But what you said, that one needs to think about if it helps if put at the top of the page, does make sense. Thank you.

Based on your items and number of listings, you would probably benefit more from Promoted Listings Standard (PLS) vs Promoted Listings Advanced (PLA).
Target the items you wish to promote and select a fixed promotion rate. You only pay the PLS fee if/when the items sells.
Good luck to you!

I agree if more people do not use the advanced listing feature, it may go away. Ebay gets 12 .55 % per sale, then subscription fees, the promotion fees and now advanced promotion fees, and we have to give Free Shipping and Free returns, seems like a stacked deck, I have good margins on my inventory, I do not know how people are going to last here on eBay, Amazon takes over 20% of my sales eBay is more than that

Yes, based on experiences, I find the standard promoted listing is more practical. I've been using it for years, and I don't think I'll use the Advanced plan in the future. It's not for me.
