I made a sale yesterday afternoon on an item that had several watchers on it - unusual for this type of item. Almost immediately after receiving payment, I got a message from the buyer saying they used the wrong payment method. They requested a a cancellation and said they would pay again.
I canceled, refunded in full, relisted the item, and messaged the buyer the link to re-buy. They still haven't repurchased and now I'm out 3 potential buyers (watchers) AND the listing fee. Needless to say, I'm irritated.
Would you block this buyer or wait? Keep in mind they don't leave poor feedback for sellers, but they don't leave much feedback at all overall.

I would have blocked the second they asked for the cancel.
You will never be repaid, ebay showed them one cheaper and they bought it and that story is the easiest way of getting out of the transaction.
It's canceled, relist - block the buyer, and move on.

Since they do not leave bad fdbk, I would not block them. I would however send them a diplomatic email letting them know that you are NOT upset about them not re-purchasing because you understand that things happen. This way, they MAY remember you as being kind and come back and buy something else or bid up your auctions.

Block and move on. If they leave bad FB in the future, come on back and we will help you through that too.
I understand your concern over the Watchers you had on the listing. There is a way you can salvage that when you list the item again. When you list it again, you can select Sell Similar or you can select Relist. For the most part there really isn't much of a distinction between the two anymore but there is something important that using the RELIST function CAN supply you. When you RELIST a listing, Ebay will send out an auto email to ALL the watchers on the original listing to let them know it is active again.
This does NOT happen if you use the Sell Similar function.

Just because the buyer has not left FB yet, doesn't mean they won't in the future. They have 60 days in which to do so. But Blocking a buyer has NOTHING to do with they ability for the buyer to leave FB on a transaction.
Poking the bear, so to speak, when it isn't necessary is rarely a good idea on Ebay. Just leaving it alone is all the seller needs to do. No FB and no communication unless the buyer contacts the seller, then that is different. And if they do, just stay professional and all should be fine.

OK - just opinions here, not trying to TELL anyone what to do. I've always had GREAT experiences with doing what i opined, being kind and diplomatic has ALWAYS worked for me 😉

Some buyers take advantage of "kind". Personally, I would not have given this person a second chance to screw me over on another transaction.

There is nothing wrong with being kind and I didn't mean to make it sound as if it was wrong. If you view my FB, you will easily see I take really good care of my customers and that sometimes takes biting your lip and being kind when it seems impossible. But with that said, there is NOTHING wrong with deciding you do not want to do business with someone that lied to you or otherwise caused you issues.
With that said, if you choose to continue to allow such members to purchase from you and possibly do it again to you, that is your right in how you handle your business. For me, I can't afford to lose the time and money over and over again if I have the ability to cut down on this behavior I most certainly will. That does not make me any less kind. It means I have a business to run and a family to feed.

I understand, but we don't know why that person didn't pay (so far) any number of things could have happened to delay or stop her. I love hearing from 'old school' ebayers like you! You must be appalled to see how ebay is today as opposed to how it was back then 😮

@uzumakey I wouldn't over analyze even though it could be a competitor taking your item off the market while thiers winds down towards a sale. I've had a few cancallation requests and bid retraction requests over time ... I simply comply and move on ... often I receive a thank you message for responding quickly. Have you gotten a "thank you" message from the Buyer?

Some things yes and some things no. If Ebay had stayed the way it was back when I started selling, they would most likely have been left in the dust of other sites. Technology changes and changes quickly. Buyers wants and needs change over time as well. So many things have to progress if you want to stay relevant in the current market.
But I have to say that sometimes, Ebay seems to make changes just for the sake of being able to say they have made a change. Sometimes it just serves no purpose.

If a watcher were going to buy, he would buy.
The watchers are lookie-lous, possibly sellers who have similar items, and are not potential buyers.
Relist (or sell similar) and move on.

@uzumakey wrote: The main reason I don't think this is a case of finding something cheaper/a competitor messing with my sales is just the nature of the item. It's a mixed lot of niche items for collectors, not anything particularly valuable. I've relisted and am hoping my watchers are alerted, but no one has re-watched the item yet unfortunately.
I was trying to give the buyer the benefit of the doubt because they sounded young, but at this point I doubt they're going to repurchase. They've ignored me outright since requesting the cancel - no thank you, no "I'll be back to buy," no acknowledgment at all.

10 to 1 you're right ... I certainly hope the other Watchers come back and one of them purchases from you.
