Winning Bidder Wants Cheaper Shipping

On Friday, someone wins on one of my coin auctions. After the listing ended, the winning bidder asks me if I could use a less expensive method like Regular Mail. I usually ship coins via USPS Ground Advantage. I replied to him that because he won the coin, it's against eBay policy for me to change the shipping method and cost after the listing had already closed. But, he tells me that I could ship a cheaper way and then refund the difference.

I like tracking on every order. Can't prove it was actually delivered without it.

What kind of item price are you talking about?

Buyers can’t negotiate shipping after they win an auction. The time to ask questions like that is before they bid.
Ground Advantage is the best way to ship because you can track it and prove delivery if the buyer claims not received.
It is against eBay policy to ship using a cheaper route than stated in the listing.

I would simply reply that I need to ship as stated in the listing for both of our benefit. If they would like to request a cancel you can do that as well.

They likely KNOW that they can't dictate terms after the sale, but some do anyway. Block them to prevent future dealing with this type of buyer.

Tell the buyer

1.) I use 'tracked' shipments so both you and I know where the item is and when it's delivered.

2.) If you don't like that- let me know and I will simply cancel the order and report as a 'non payment' (unless paid; then you will simply cancel/refund)

I normally print shipping labels via eBay. Hence, shipments always have a tracking number when the labels are printed.

They want you to 'stick a stamp on an envelope' and ship it for .60c....

So, like I said: tell the buyer what I stated.

@superdude10

Sounds as if your "buyer" already plans to pull an "item not received" case on you -- even before you ship it out!

Explain to your "buyer" that the cheapest USPS shipping rate WITH TRACKING is USPS Ground Advantage, and that there is NO tracking with only a postage stamp.

If the "buyer" remains unsatisfied, suggest that the "buyer" cancel the order and you will refund.

If the "buyer" has not yet paid for the item, wait until the payment period times out, and open an unpaid item case against the "buyer."

Don't let the "buyer" bully you into shipping without tracking!

I am assuming the buyer purchased a coin in the cardboard wrapper.  Tell your buyer these cannot be shipped in a plain envelope with a stamp because USPS needs the item to be flexible to go through the machines (plus obviously no tracking). Maybe they are looking for you to use the ESE.

I looked a the items you have recently sold.  Some of those items went for a fraction of their value and the buyers want reduced shipping also?  I would not do it.

Any request for cheaper shipping comes from a scammer.

Every. Single. Time.

Cheaper usually means untracked. And untracked means the scammer wins the Not Received claim every time and keeps the item which was delivered.

For the record, most of my shipments go out without tracking which starts at $12 here in Canada, and is higher for shipping internationally.

Because most people are honest.

The clue that you are dealing with a scammer is the request/demand for cheaper shipping.

"I regret that you are not happy with your purchase. I can cancel the transaction if you prefer." No mention of why they are unhappy. No mention of when or why you will cancel.

If they don't pay after 96 hours (to the minute) open an Unpaid Item Dispute and slap them with an Unpaid Item Strike.

Ground Advantage provides tracking.

But its a violation of ebay policy to attempt to change shipping after the fact.

With respect, it's not a scammer every time. If this were a more expensive coin, then I would suspect an INR scammer, but this doesn't look to be the case with lower tier coins that could qualify for ESE.

Methinks the buyer has received other coins that were ESE and doesn't want to pay more for the upgraded shipping. They're maybe not a seller and looks at shipping from a "Prime" point of view.

Of course, they could also totally know the sitch and they're playing the system. What fun we have selling online...

Okay then since you seem comfortable with doing so ..... Go ahead. Just remember you are responsible for delivering the item according to the terms you stated on the listing.

Lift your left leg at midnight to start off on the right foot. Happy new Year!

Buyers really dislike paying $0.01 for an item and $5 for shipping. Have you considered free shipping and listing the starting bid at $5? You come out the same and buyers can't complain abour shipping costs.

What this does to your resulting bids/sales, I'm not sure. Psychologically buyer enjoys winning for $0.01. Would this drive sales and bids down? Idk.

Just a thought though..... most sellers don't bother with GA for cheap coins like that. Most buyers won't claim Not Received over a $1 or $2 coin. Shipping w/ a stamp is a great option for that type of item. Or ESE (ebay's "tracked" envelope)
