Why is ebay taking so much of my proceeds?

Something is definitely different here than how this used to be.. I've sold items on ebay on and off for almost 20 years and whatever changed in the past 6 months is really messing with my head.. The amount of money that ebay takes from your selling proceeds seems to have gone up by a lot.. Here's an example.. I recently sold an item for $50 plus $8 for shipping.. The payment that I received, including tax, was just over $60 and my shipping label only cost $7 and some change.. The cash that I received from my item is $40.. How does that work out? That doesn't seem right... Are you telling me that ebay is taking $10 in fees for an item that only sold for $50? Since when? If I had sold this item 2-3 years ago, it would not have been that much.. They are taking a serious chunk of the money i'm making from the stuff I'm selling.. Why?

And on a side note, what is the deal with this new payout schedule? When I used to sell stuff on ebay before, I would get paid right away and the money would clear with my bank and be available within 1-2 days.. Now, every time I sell something, the funds are being put on hold until there's tracking confirmation and I'm seeing some sort of payout schedule in my payments section..

This is all new to me.. Something is different here.

$50.00 plus $8.00 plus tax if any and then the final value fee is calculated plus the $0.30.

If you did any books per item say a year or two ago: compare the total cost of eBay and PP per item: if you did to today.

Seems you had no idea what it was costing you to sell on eBay.

Shocking how many of this type of post we have been getting on the boards.

I think most of them don't realize that the shipping is being taken out, so they think the fees are much higher than they really are.

killerofworlds:   Sorry if some of the responses were a little "snippy".

It just gets a little irritating because at least once or twice a day (if not more) we get sellers that come here complaining about the exact same thing. We're all surprised that so many sellers sell items here without any clue what  the the fees are or how much ebay is charging them.   Don't take it personal.

The thing is, that you asked the same thing not long ago and people here gave you detailed, useful, informative answers at that time.   Evidently their work on your behalf was in vain.

The experience of all eBay sellers is that the total takeout under Managed Payments is just about the same as it was when PayPal was the payment processor.   Occasionally, it is a little bit more.  Occasionally, it is a little bit less.   Overall, it's nearly the same.   (On the whole, over time, I've found the total to be lower.)

Ebay wants to increase their profits every year. Just like you want to increase your profits every year.

What you're doing as a seller is no different than what Ebay is doing as a company. Don't get me wrong, Ebay **bleep** me off just as much as you...but thats the game that's being played, and you just gotta play with the rules that are dealt.

Getting an answer that you do not like does not justify the attitude.

I wonder how quick people will be to respond the next time you have a question.

There must be something in what you ask because it comes up quite a lot.  I've worked here for a long time and grew along with everything but as a newcomer, or, come backer, it must be a shock for all the changes. Always, it seems, at Holiday Time!  Fall updates, spring updates...whatever. Tough Town!

Re: Why is ebay taking so much of my proceeds?

From reading many similar posts here, it seems like some sellers see the shipping cost as part of the final value fee, since it's money that they do not receive.  When they figure it that way, of course, it seems like the FVF is much higher than it is.

I believe you're right, but how in the world could they think that?  (She asked, rhetorically.)

Something?  Yes, as explained , an unawareness of what is going on.

In some instances an inability to comprehend what is going on.

In other instances failure to even try to figure it out.

It's all there. The #'s add up, but to some it still does not make sense.

Re: Why is ebay taking so much of my proceeds?

Before MP seller's got pretty much what they expected in their Paypal account - so all was well. What they never thought to do was check their end of month eBay invoice for all the fee breakdowns that were associated with the PP payout.

Now, because it is taken at the POS - people see this glaring difference between the sold price and the actual funds to be paid to them and scream in shock and horror.

Going to MP actually reduced my fee's a little, so I can not complain.

Glad it was rhetorically.

"Ebay wants to increase their profits every year."

The final value fee has either increased minimally or has not increased.  The funds just all go to eBay instead of to eBay and Paypal.

The problem here, as I mentioned before, is that there are some sellers who are counting the shipping fee as part of the FVF.  It isn't and never has been.  Have no idea what can be done to make that clear to those sellers who feel that way.

I honestly don't really care... If people are going to give me an attitude, they're going to get it right back, because they chose the wrong person to get an attitude with in the first place.. Either be helpful, and answer the question in a professional way, or kindly move along and say nothing at all.

Re: Why is ebay taking so much of my proceeds?

I haven't sold anything for a long time on eBay and I just sold something for $50 free shipping and they kept almost 8 bucks. That is so wrong. And then when I just did my taxes recently I had literally sold something for less than $13 last year and they sent me a form from the IRS and took the amount out of my taxes. The $12.  I'm disgusted with their greedy corporate America asses.  I've read some of these comments and people can be real **bleep**s. I am self employed and I don't go around raising everybody's prices that I've worked for for years because that would be rude as hell and you know what?? It's because of those people that I have a good job so I'm not gonna go raise their prices just because everybody else is raising theirs so it's not justified. Especially with a multi million dollar company like eBay. Probably multi billion. It's just greed everywhere. Barf

You actually think that the entire amount that you make in the previous year is fully and completely, 100%, taxable so that you just turn around and pay the IRS that exact same amount in return? That would mean you work for free because 100% of your paycheck is then taken by the IRS.... smh....
