I'm confused about this question and I'm hoping to get some good answer's. Because all I see is conflicting one's and they are very confusing to me. First off, I was always told to only use a white background on all my picture's for my store or Google won't use them and my item's won't sell. Now Ebay has this new AI feature to add nice background's to my main picture to make it sell faster ! I am very confused by this and don't know what to do to help my store grow ! Please all smart people help me out with this and explain your answer's to me ? Thanks' Everyone in advance ! 😎

It doesn't matter (though clashing red and green or whatever backgrounds I see are pretty bad and look amateurish) - what you want is lack of clutter. Just keep it clean, and you'll be golden!

It doesn't matter for Google anymore, choose whichever you like!

if you do a Google search, you'll see the background doesn't make much of a difference now.

White. The AI stuff is pretty, but it's very confusing for some of us and it makes it harder to see the actual item.

I think the Google/white background advice was only for a year or 2 and many paid no attention to it anyway.......use what color you want, but keep the background plain so attention is on the item.......

I use my own unique backgrounds in most items to identify me as a brand. (So if you buy from me and know what my pictures look like you can search for an item and quickly spot if it's something I sell). Seems to work well, even though the background is loud, and people complain about it because of that. I have my coins in holders which help make the loud background not so prominent. I use less loud backgrounds on other things so you can see the items well (navy blue is what I use for lots of banknotes and stamps).

Some people, including myself, believe an item on a white background "pops out" more than a colored background. We also believe anything other than a solid color background detracts from the image and depresses views, as well as looking like an amateur effort most of the time.
What you do with other than the main image is largely irrelevant in terms of background.

I use whatever color is best to showcase my item. There's one item I have that's a nativity made of clear crystal. I can use my distributor stock photo but it has a white background and you can't see any details. I took my own photos which are lilac and gray and it shows much better.
You do what suits you, and your products. White background works for many products, but not for all.

It's more important to think of the buyer when taking pictures. You want the pictures to be as good as possible for their eyes not google.

Google used to prioritize white or pale gray backgrounds in search results, which led eBay to follow suit for better visibility. A few years ago, that changed with the rise of AI-generated backgrounds and more colorful options appearing in Google searches.
Some sellers now go for loud, bright backgrounds to grab attention, but this can overwhelm the product itself. Instead, a non-intrusive solid background or AI-generated design can highlight your item without distractions. For example, beach themes are perfect for Hawaiian shirts, while snowy settings work well for winter wear. Pale pastels are also a great choice—they’re eye-catching and flattering to the product, helping to engage buyers while keeping the focus on the item. The goal is to get seen and shopped, with emphasis on shopped.
