Customer mysteriously returned a computer I sold.
I shipped this item from my UPS store and a month later they called and told me I had a package there.
I went and picked it up and it was the computer I sold about a month ago.
The buyer shipped the item back to the UPS store without notifying me that he was returning it.
Weird part is I saw nothing on eBay stating the customer had an issue and I did not get any charge back notifications from the buyer regarding this.
Upon opening the package I noticed missing screws in the back of the computer.
I also notice the box with all the documentation as well as the install cd's and Windows license was missing.
I decided to further inspect.
Upon initial inspection the SSD drive that was in the computer when sold is missing.
The memory is different that what was sold with the computer.
Further looking I found that the system board and cpu is also different.
Now I have not received anything from this buyer in regards to the return.
What should I do about this issue?

Not sure there is anything you can or should do next? eBay MBG is for 30 days after the buyer received the product. It sounds like this time frame might have expired for the buyer to make a claim against the transaction.
As far as the missing parts I am not sure how you can recover them? There has been no request opened and although I do not know the value of the parts taken it might be that they were more valuable than the entire computer to the buyer, so that might be why no communication or request opened against the transaction.
I would call eBay and explain the events and ask them what you need to do moving forward and also make sure they make a report about the incident.
Good Luck Selling!

I agree. Call Ebay CS and tell them what's going.
The buyer needed to follow eBay's procedures when it comes to returns and refunds. It all is checked and tracked through the system.
So, on a second thought, I don't know, but I would play dumb for a while, wait for what he is going to say or do. Eventually you are out of the computer you shipped but got scraps in return. If he says or does anything, then call CS. You need to think about you, and only you here. The buyer, dishonest enough needs to learn a lesson, play by the rules.
But for what I see, he got what he wanted and may not act upon a return or refund. You will never know until he contacts you.
Good luck!
If you haven't paid for your item, you're a winning bidder, not a buyer!

All he will need to provide to his credit card company is the return info and he gets a refund.
expect a credit card chargeback soon

Ouch.. something tells me that is what will happen.
Thanks for the info..
I'll call Ebay and explain everything and see what they want to do.
Right now I would just call it even to not deal with the problem anymore even though the computer does not even boot (it worked perfectly went sent).
I'm just afraid of the charge back stuff as the user would have received all the good parts sent the non working parts back and then tries to get it all for free.

Call eBay, get the buyers phone number. Call the buyer.
Call paypal, let paypal know what transpired on the transaction and get direction.
I think as a hedge, keep the box, packing material etc the item came back in. You may need all of that material to file a police report should they attempt a charge back after defrauding you out of the computer components.
Think about it.
Cheers

eBay likely would not do anything and tell you "it's just a cost of doing business". It comes down to a 'he said/she said' situation. You say the parts received were not the same parts shipped. The buyer says the opposite. He said. She said. And eBay will back the buyer and tell the seller it's just a cost of doing business.
PayPal may well do the same, especially since the buyer can document that he sent a package of the same size and weight as the package you sent him.
His Credit Card company will definitely back him, for the same reasons as eBay -- their customer against a retailer. Retailer loses, hands down.
Way back when eBay stayed out of disputes and customers paid by check, I sold computers and parts. Not today -- I've sold a few used systems that I repaired/reset/rebuilt, but there was not a lot of cash invested in any of them, and the time spent was enjoyable and cannot be made otherwise by a deal gone bad.
With the faceless nature of the Internet, people feel emboldened to try things they would never attempt if they had to deal with you face-to-face. And it's likely to get worse before it gets better.
Of course, the buyer would have to explain why they waited 30 days to return a non-working computer when they bought one that was working. If anyone would even stop long enough in their rush to 'make it right' to consider that as a question needing asking. Then again, this person may be experienced enough to have a ready answer. Wonder if his CC company would care to share his returns/chargeback history? Or those of other cards, held thru other banks, also in this person's name.
I wish you the best. CC's limit chargebacks to 60 days, right? PayPal allows cases up to 180 days. Both important to remember.

I would do absolutely nothing until the buyer either contacts you or starts the return process through E-bay.
I would then simply agree to refund them upon their returning the item.
Which, of course, they cannot do unless they have proof that it was returned like a tracking number.
Then go from there.

He most likely has tracking info since it was shipped UPS.
Here is the kicker.. the item was shipped back to the UPS store - Not to me!
The store was able to determine it was the package I had shipped out a few weeks ago and contacted me.
I discussed everything with Ebay and Paypal.
According to them I am safe.
We shall see.
At least I was proactive in this!
I have had a very good run with ebay but the last 6 moths I have had 2 hits and luckily nothing came back at me because I had my I's dotted and T's crossed.
The problem the user will have in saying the parts were not swapped is I have dated pictures of the internals on the machine. I also have the specs as well showing what parts are internal to this computer.
This is a mini computer with a unique motherboard / power supply / etc in it..
Thanks all!

Dont think the original tracking number would work as it would be before the request for the refund. That would be interesting.

I was thinking the same thing... the computer was returned before a return was requested. And it was not returned to the seller but to the cartage agent (fancy term for 'shipping company').
OP: do please keep us updated. My employer has had items returned used and eBay refunded in full, and charged them with a defect as well because he refused to accept the return of a 1/2 burned candle! Oddest, altho fully explainable, return was of a paper-folding machine. Buyer complained that there were no trays included. Seller explained the trays had been packing in bubble shipping bags to prevent damage to them or to the rest of the contents. Buyer complained that there were no trays included. Escalated the Return Request. Seller sent return shipping label. Buyer returned paper folding machine in original box. They also included the "missing" trays, which had been opened/unpacked and then repacked and resealed. So they returned everything but got the seller to pay the freight. They contacted eBay and, of course, eBay claimed it was just a cost of doing business. But at least they can resell the paper folder.

I'm sorry that happened! It is truly ridiculous. If I were you I contact the buyer and tell them that the return was unauthorized, not even sent to you and the item was altered. I would ask if they wanted it sent back to them and if so you could invoice them through paypal for shipping.
I had something similar happen to me a couple of months ago, although the buyer did reach out to me. A buyer bought a skirt, requested a return. I said yes, send it back by xyz date to xyz address. Never heard back or received it back. Two months later the buyer contacted me and said she shipped it out that day. I told her sorry, it was too late. I did inform eBay just as a heads up. I refused the package (first time I have ever refused a package) because shipping was pricy and I didn't feel I should have to fund getting it back to her. She never filed anything else.
