Did you mean:

When listing an item should I...

put more, or less, info in the "item description" area?  Does this help or hurt in searches?  Is it basically like a "tag word"... and it will pull up my listing if someone types it into their search?!  I'm still a big rookie at selling and am trying to figure it all out.  Or, does it hurt me because they HAVE to type in that word in order to pull up my item?!  I see that some sellers have TONS in the "item description" box and some have almost nothing.  Just wondering if there's a strategy here...  🙂

what's a posting ID? You mean you don't think I'm actually selling? so confused

Some sellers here choose to have a separate account which is specifically for posting to the forums in order to maintain privacy.

Ok... I'll go for that. But can YOU see my listings?! lol. I can see them, but maybe it's just me!!!

Don't worry.  Let's use our energy for something more constructive.   And here's my thought:  list with Free Shipping.  All you do is build the cost into the price of your item.

$2 list + $3 Ship = $4.99/Free Ship

I resisted Free Shipping for a long time--just did not wanna do it.  But I'll tell you the truth:  it does make a difference, and I began selling more items when I offered Free Ship.  But I generally only offer Free Shipping on things that I can send First Class--if I end up selling a big bunch, I don't mind putting it all in a flat rate and it still works out.

And there's one more thing:  you will make more money with Free Ship because you won't be refunding $24 of your total just because of shipping.  Although that was nice for your buyer, it's pretty awful for you moneywise.

Here's an example:  I sell bandanas.  My profit margin on one bandana is only $1.  But if I sell 4 bandanas to the same person, my profit increase is huge since I'm not being eaten up with shipping costs since everything fits in one padded envelope, and the margin goes up to a total of $4 per bandana.

Maybe not disclosing this to the buyer sounds mean but it's not:  it's Business.   The buyer is still getting what he wants at a reasonable all-in-one price and I'm earning more money.

Give this some thought.  Your listings look great.  I'm sorely tempted to buy!

there is nothing wrong with my computer because when I click on other sellers who actually have items for sale and are not just using a posting id, I see all their pictures just fine. so how can there be a problem with my computer?

There is a system glitch that is causing problems for some people.  Read more here:

Re: When listing an item should I...

(because you really have to do it with tracking... as other sellers were telling me).

Cookie Jar Insurance.

Add enough (usually only a few pennies) to each asking price to offset the very occasional problem. And those problems are much more likely to be disagreements or even your error than scammers.

Most people who use CJI (also called self-insurance) report they make money on the premiums, just like a real insurance company.

calculated shipping... how do I figure in the weight of the box I will put it in if I don't know how many items they will be buying, and hence, stuffing into one box?

You do Calculated Shipping for each item separately.

Then, if your buyer has multiple purchases, which I understand is the norm with scrapbooking supplies, you can refund 'some' of the postage the customer paid.

and her shipping came to $37! I fit it all in a medium flat rate box ($13) and sent her back $24.

Only 'some' because you may end up with so many purchases that you move into a more expensive shipping ratecard, or you may need different packaging. And don't forget, you are paying a 10% fee to eBay on shipping and a 2.9% fee to Paypal. You lost money on the refund.  Be less generous. This is business, not personal.

Re: When listing an item should I...

Someone else suggested this on another thread earlier in the week. I really need to think about it... and try it. My background is in marketing and branding... and there's a lot to be said for the human mind when it comes to buying. Just the words "free shipping" trigger something in the brain. I can't tell you how many times I've bought something on Amazon, or another site, even if it's a little more than I've seen somewhere else... just because it's FREE SHIP! So maybe offer free ship on all of the embellishments... but not on the layouts?! Those are the ones I'm really nervous about. Thanks for all of the helpful info!!!

Re: When listing an item should I...

thank you!!! So... if I don't do the insurance thing, then I can't buy my postage on ebay, right? I thought someone said the only way it's sold here, is WITH insurance... is that correct? I wouldn't want to have to go to the post office every time I need postage. Or are you saying I would just buy it through the USPS website directly?

So for calculated shipping... measure the weight of each item separately... WITH it's individual packaging?

Ugh... the fees 😞 I know 😞

Re: When listing an item should I...

I sell from Canada, and deal with Canada Post's vastly different shipping rates.

It costs me 85 cents to send a 30gm/2cm thick item across the country without tracking.

It would cost me $15.49 to ship the same item Regular Parcel, the cheapest rate with tracking.

In the past month, I've only shipped about 10% with any sort of tracking. No problems from buyers. Most were bulky and required parcel shipping. One or two were above my $100 comfort zone and went tracked even though they were sold with Free Shipping*.

The demand for tracking is twofold.

  1. American buyers expect it.
  2. EBay makes it a metric for Top Rated Seller for US sellers. (EBay understands that USPS is almost the lowest shipping costs out there and USPS tracking is incredibly cheap.)

For 1.) USPS is also very fast and efficient. The chances of your shipment taking more than five business days to get anywhere in the mainland US are slight.

If you are in a location from which shipping is slow, you can extend your shipping time from one day (preferred) to two or three days, allowing your shipment to get to the nearest postal hub.

For 2.) Top Rated Seller has some advantages in fees, but if you spend the money you save on unnecessarily expensive shipping, what's the point?

I wouldn't want to have to go to the post office every time I need postage.

Umm- you can also buy pregummed prepaid labels anytime you are in the Post Office for future needs. Most people call these "stamps".

You can buy postage (if you mean stamps) on eBay. I sell it myself under another ID at a 20% discount from face value in counted packets and with free shipping. Most of mine are Canadian of course, although at the moment I do have a little US postage listed.

Or you can buy shipping labels through Paypal . Again I'm dealing with a different postal system, but I have CanadaPost/SnapShip services and Shippo services available to me.

There is also something called stamps.com. Again, I'm non-US.

With each sale, check a different possiblity. You are in a learning curve.

measure the weight of each item separately... WITH it's individual packaging?

Yes.

But you'll soon know how much each package type weighs.

My items are mostly unbreakable so I use poly envelopes, which are waterproof. Much more important to me.

I buy those on ebay from emailers.ca, who offer Free Shipping from Canada to Canada. Cheaper than the Chinese and faster. YMMV because; borders.

And remember each rate has a weight and dimensional variation.

Our Light Packet rates run from 0-30gm up to 200-500gm  with four other rates in between.

The weight of a (poly) bubble envelope is 10gm.

You mentioned branding.

You may notice if you peek at my listings, that I have used some simple HTML coding that gives me a colour background for all my listings. Nothing fancy, but I think it does set me apart a bit.

That was free once I figured out how to do it and saved the coding in a desktop file. I just use the HTML tab on the Sell Your Item form Description section, plug in the coding and description as a cut and paste and also paste in the Terms of Sale.

I think it may be too long for current mobile shoppers, but I am old and set in my ways.

*Keep in mind that Free Shipping means the cost of shipping is included in the asking price.

Re: When listing an item should I...

My thinking on the topic is that you should use enough space in an auction listing to accurately describe the item being offered for sale.  It is especially important when offering used items as any defects or blemishes need to be addressed in order to avoid potential SNAD complaints.

For new items being sold at fixed prices, I still believe that the description should be adequate to describe the item.  Fixed price listings, in my opinion, should be more like the old Sears' catalog descriptions giving all the info pertinent to the items that the customer needs to make a buying decision.

One thing that I feel needs to be kept in mind is to use photographs as if there were no descriptive text and use the text as if there were no photographs.  Each should be able to stand alone.

Wrong. Insurance is an option on the eBay listing form.  You don't have to purchase it.

USPS automatically includes insurance at no additional cost for Priority Mail; it's up to $50 of coverage for retail and for regular online rates, and up to $100 for Commercial Plus, which is the rate paid by eBay's Top Rated Sellers.
