Did you mean:

When could I, and when should I?

I just have a simple question.   Im new to selling on eBay.  (Almost 1 month now). I have sold 7 items at close to $100 so far.  With 100% positive.  When would be a good time..  and when would I even be allowed to list an item valued at more than $2,000 dollars?

Personally, I would never list something that expensive online and I’m not new.

eBay’s Money Back Guarantee favours the buyer. Sellers rarely prevail.

Hi and welcome.

Nearly all new sellers have listing limits. It will take a few months at least before you can work your way up to high enough limits to accommodate that price point. You will need to have a stable history of successful sales, with no policy violations, before eBay will lift your restrictions.

I would never encourage a new seller to jump into the fire by listing an expensive item before they have established a higher number of feedback. New sellers with pricey goods are scam magnets. There are nefarious online stalkers just looking to defraud an inexperienced seller out of their item, money, or both.

So use these months to prove your merit to eBay and build up some feedback and more experience. Pay special attention to the eBay User Agreement and the Money Back Guarantee. Come to the forums and read read read. You can learn a lot here.

I wish you much success. Good luck!

I would not list an item of that price here unless I could afford to lose it, and I've sold here for quite a while and am still a fan of eBay.

If you can afford to lose it, it'll take a while to build up feedback to the point where you won't be a target for scammers (eBay is not the only place where this happens, BTW) - they prey on new sellers.

Other than that, follow @fashunu4eeuh  advice.

Thank you for that enlightening and encouraging answer!  I am in no hurry to sell the more expensive stuff so I will absolutely take the next few months to work on improving feedback and success rates.

Thanks for the reply.  I am super paranoid of scammers.  Would you or anyone mind giving me a few examples of some of the not so obvious signs that someone is trying to scam me?

Never list $2,000 dollars item nor even high value items in the hundreds of dollars your going to get scammed and lose the item, the postage and the money. Personally I think your better off sticking to under $250 items on here. At least until your a very experienced seller. To many new sellers get scammed because they have not read up on what could happen when you list a pricey item on here. Don't do it!

There will never be a good time to sell something that pricey on this venue.  You could easily be scammed because your a new seller.   You could easily be scammed if it's in the 'card' category.   EBay may even think you are a scammer.  What happens won't be pretty.   It would be better to sell locally and in person anything that expensive, even if you only get half you have something.

The common one going around now are people who want to purchase, or who have purchased and not paid, and who want to text you concerning it, payment or anything else.  Everything needs to be done on the site.  This is a big one for new sellers - I also sell on Poshmark and when I was a new seller there I had the usual line of scammers who wanted to me to text/email them until I had enough sales under my belt.

Another one is what every online merchant may run into, anywhere.  Having a return filed and the buyer shipping back a box of rocks or whatever.  eBay will close this out in the buyer's favour once the item has been shown to be delivered back to you.  This is the principal reason I won't sell high-dollar items on here.

Having said that, the chances of stuff like this happening here are low - people like to give the impression that eBay is all scams all day - no, they're exaggerating, but any marketplace website is going to have scammers, not just ebay, and even if they may be like 1% of the buyers here, they do cause damage and it does happen and one really needs to be aware.

Electronics are the worst, seems like sports cards can be difficult.  If you're selling collectibles, etc., a lot less chances.

What I would do is just keep selling here, learn, build up your experience and feedback and then review the issue.

Also recall that people come here with their problems and questions, and reading these forums can give a really jaundiced view of what happens here, because most people don't come on here and say "Hey, I just sold a dingus v.2 and it was GREAT."
