What to do when a buyer makes an unexpected pick up to maintain seller rating for shipping on time

Call eBay?

I'd try resending the invoice with 'local pickup only' selected - no shipping options.

This would only work, though, if they paid with cash on pickup. If they paid prior to pickup, I guess you may have to call ebay a few times to find someone who can figure it out.

I don't understand the question. Or I don't understand the title line. More information, please...

I'm not sure if this would prevent a late ship ding or not. One isn't going to hurt you if you do get one. Only if you have a lot of them will it affect your account.  This WILL protect from an item not received case, which is much more important than a late ship ding.

"Proof of collection

For proof of collection, you can use the eBay app to scan the QR code or manually enter the 6 digit code the buyer received after completing their purchase.

To scan the code, go to the Arrange Pickup screen on the eBay app and tap the Scan to confirm pickup button. The item will immediately be marked as delivered. You’ll still need to mark the item as paid if you collect cash at the time of delivery.

If the buyer doesn’t have their email with the codes, a signed receipt/invoice or an eBay message from the buyer confirming they collected the item can protect you against item not received cases."

The easier you are to offend the easier you are to control.

My guess is that the buyer was able to drive to the seller's local area even though the listing was meant to be shipped / mailed.  I had this happen maybe twice in ten years and it is usually due to time constraints for a birthday present or similar.  All you need to do is manually select "shipped" or "mailed" as if you were not including tracking.  Then you have done the best you can to show the time the item was delivered.  Calling ebay would be a waste of time for something so minor.

Arrgh,  I forgot the most important part.  If you are worried about the tracking showing that the item arrived the alternative is to use the shipping label and mail an envelope with a note to the buyer to remind them to provide 5 star feedback for going the extra mile to allow them to pick up the item locally.  That way when the envelope arrives it gets scanned as received.  That service will cost my buyers an extra $5 at the time of pick up.  It was easier before Covid.  Now it might become a standoff.  "First you put the $5 on the table and back away at least six feet".  Then you approach the table and put the package down and collect the $5 for your trouble which barely covers the cost of sending the extra envelope and driving to meet the buyer.  An episode of Portlandia could cover this quite nicely I am sure.  It might be similar to the "Right of Way Standoff" episode.
