What's in a name? What's in YOUR name?

Ok so there's a LOT of doom & gloom, the sky is falling, posts about MP and the like so I figured I would try something a little light hearted..

Tick-Tock let's see how long this post will last before poofing..whistle.gif

Perhaps the MODS will gimme a lil slack since we're still waiting on that "Break Room" board..

I've often wondered about other members handles and how they choose them.

Some are petty obvious, some quite clever but many are still a mystery to me..

Is anybody willing to share how they chose their posting ID?

I'll go first; Mine is a play on peek-a-boo I see you, I know the spelling is atrocious. LOL

I've used this handle on & off for over a decade..

Ok Now you.... 000peacock.gif

Re: What's in a name? What's in YOUR name?

Back during the beta of Gmail, you had to be invited by another member of gmail to have an account.

Each user was given 5 invitations they could send out for people to create accounts.

People with extra invitations would just create a random email account, and then post the password on a public forum. Whoever saw the post first could claim it and then change the password to "win" the email address.

LuckyTheWinner is a variant of the email address of the account that I "won" in this fashion during the Gmail beta.

Re: What's in a name? What's in YOUR name?

Thanks for starting a positive thread for a little bit of fun this weekend, picabo!

Many decades ago, my two brothers and I and our families would go out to a restaurant. If there was a line backed up, we would give the host our actual last name for the waiting list. The host or hostess would usually say, "What was it again?" or, "Could you spell it?" It became a minor irritant to us to clear it up all the time. When it was time for our name to be called to be seated, we could not hear our name over the din, or it was pronounced incorrectly. If you've ever been to the Northwoods Inn in the LA area, or to a Texas Roadhouse or similar noisy place, you know what I mean.

My brothers and I got together and we decided just to say "Duffy" when asked. It's short and can always be easily heard over restaurant noise. The only drawback is that sometimes it is pronounced "Daffy" when called. Oh, well...

And my favorite number is 4, so what's better than four 4's? Hence duffy4444. I've been using it ever since going online in the early 80s.

In case you're wondering, I never use it as my password...

Cheers, Duffy

My pleasure @duffy4444 I'm just happy it's lasted this long without going poof..

Nice story! I very much enjoyed that. I've always liked the 4444 at the back of your name.. I have a strange thing of seeing 444 a LOT. I even have it on a t-shirt "I see 444"  LOL

Re: What's in a name? What's in YOUR name?

it's not that much a secret or mystery - I use to have 2 xbox accounts - one of them was my username here [nuclearomen] - when i started using ebay agian few years ago (was on here longtime ago 2009 or so, closed the account) needed a name - i wasn't using that tag anymore so there you go - lol - i know not the most amazing story but whatever.

The great truth is there isn't one
And it only gets worse since that conclusion...

@geo2061 aaaaBig Thank You.gif

It has been a good deal of fun to read through..

I like your name- I never would have figured that one out.. I'm not too sure I'll live to see the next one but I can always hope..

@nuclearomen My son is big on X-box but recently has spent most of his time on WoW. It's still a cool story to add to the mix.

I also enjoyed @luckythewinner 's story.. That goes way back to old school..

Re: What's in a name? What's in YOUR name?

Wonderful to get a little personality insight into the people behind these names!

I have a couple different selling accounts, this one created lastly.  My other names were philosophical, behaviors I aspire to.

Mycheaperstuff was supposed to help me remember to keep a lid on prices, what I thought something was worth isn't what the market says, etc.

Now family members took my other accounts on one by one. I have to remember my other aspirations without the help of my name.

Re: What's in a name? What's in YOUR name?

Great thread!

My ID may be fairly self explanatory.  P and J are the initials for my first and middle name and my mom and step-father call me PJ.   The cdn is because I’m Canadian and 2005 is the year I registered.

Hi - I chose my corny name by the process of a lack of better sense at the time.  L

Re: What's in a name? What's in YOUR name?

This ID is my high school and year I graduated.  Yeah, I am old.
There are several Monroe High Schools across the nation.

My selling ID, though, will remain unspecified.

Other than to say it is similar to the name of a popular song from the 1970s.

Re: What's in a name? What's in YOUR name?

I created my ID years ago. At that point in life, I and my father were buying old tractors in fence rows. We would drag them out, bring them home, and restore them. Mostly Farmall tractors, but would not turn down Case, Silver king, Minneapolis Molines, etc.

We'd take a tractor with a stuck motor, rusted to all get out, and make them new again. Doing all the motor work, transmission fixes, and restoring paint and body parts. After all that work, we'd put them in the antique tractor pulls. We would spend sometimes thousands of dollars, just to win $10 trophies, lol.

Dad's ID used to be farmall, mine is farmalljr.

I no longer mess with antique tractors.
