PLS or PLA are optional. I think most sellers already know that. Do you realize all search engines like Google, Bing, Yahoo, and etc charge fees similar to PLA.

So if you want your website to show up higher in the search results you will mostly have to pay ad fees. No different here on eBay my friend.

I don't pay PL fees to either eBay or Google. Yet, according to eBay;s own metrics there are times when 60% of my page views come from Google, not eBay search. Obviously the percentage changes from time to time but Google is always high up there. So someone is seeing it over there.

According to eBay's metrics in a given month my page views run into 5 figures. A page view means someone actually opened and looked at my page.Obviously it does not guarantee sales but if I am getting 5 figure page views I'm pretty happy.

Seriously, Type in "ebay 100 promoted listings" Youtube search and see what happens, plus the comments, then decide for yourself.

Highest I go is about 8% depending on the item and if I'm offering free shipping or not. One thing you can do is raise it a couple points, wait a few minutes and then do a search for the items you sell and see where your items are at on the search pages. If you don't see your items raise it by .5, wait about 5 minutes and do the search again. Gradually raise it and check your position in the search. Just raising it up to some unknown high number isn't a good idea. No reason to raise it to 15% if 9.5 will get you to the first search page. That's just an extra 5.5% for ebay.

Yes you pay fees. It's included in the 13.25% for every item. Your items are showing up on Google BECAUSE of ebay.

all that is hogwash logic and complete waste of your time. Do you believe that doing this shows your search slot result rise or fall? It's doesn't, or shows the same search results to you as to other users results? It doesn't.  Search slots change all the time and the more people are listing in category and specific item it can change many times in a day. Raising PL elections to or above their suggested percentages isn't a good idea, what that has done and everyone has seen it, is just encourages them to keep raising those suggested rates higher over their already inflated suggested rates. That 8% you think is getting better results is just being shoved to the bottom again by your competitors who are electing 10%- 15% - 20% - 50% (oh yes, there are those electing those rates and higher!) out of their desperation to make some sales. And that friends, is what ebay is selling and betting on - Desperation.

In any given for instance if a suggested rate is say 9% then half of that is what can be elected and give the same chance of sale as the higher rate, not the full suggested - that is a coax by ebay to get sellers to elect those rates, yet they have in many many many cases, no sales data history or current buying trend to justify those rates. Your just giving them more money and more of of your profit to have the idea "your item will be seen more and sell faster" - well then should be selling tons of items a day then on that logic, but your not, not a lot are! Those suggested rates doubled over night when the new way of charging PLs went into effect, the day before they were all half of what they went to. The only thing raising elections does is raise your impressions and allows them to take much more money from the seller but your sales volume will pretty much stay the same if not get worse, especially if you lower those elections.

Actually I only pay 11.9% and the "fees" in question are the ADDITIONAL Promoted Listings fees, of which I pay none. And I show up on Google because I know how to incorporate HTML coding in my listings which attracts the Google Web Crawler Spiders who devour it en mass.

you do know that those meta tags in html description aren't doing anything right? Meta data tags must be in the HEADER of a web document, which ebay already does in CSS frame, any other meta data is ignored, just as particular meta data tags have become obsolete and are now ignored by google and other search engines.

Me too.   They are watching.   To answer the question, you should decide what is reasonable. Make sure that you still have a profit after paying the fees.  I would not promote every item either.
