I have a situation where a buyer claimed all three of my originally sealed eye shadows were defective or fake because they had a strange and different smell. The request for return was accepted and she sent all three back. I received them today. All three had been opened and the inner seals removed. She claims she did not use them....only smelled them. They were $15 each and I probably will not be able to sell them again. One had a slightly different smell and the other two smelled fine to me.
I felt I should only give a partial refund because they were returned opened and possibly used.
I proceeded to check eBay's partial refund policy and saw that a buyer could decline a partial refund and then open a case for eBay to decide . So that can mean unless I give a full refund, there is the possibility I can lose a case.
Thanks for any input on this situation.

It's business not personal.
Smell can be very subjective. If she smelled to one that seemed off to you too, her emotions might have said they were also off.
I hate to say it, but you are best to just refund the whole amount. If you are making enough to pay taxes on your eBay income, the refund is a deductible expense.
Also. Ouch. If she had doubts why not stop at the first one? Shaking head.

Remember to block the buyer so she doesn't repeat.

That reminds me of a customer who returned a opened bag of chewy pineapple candy because it wasn't chewy enough (or was it too chewy?).
Welcome to retail!
