What happens if the buyer does not ship the item back?

What happens if the buyer opens an "item not as described" case and don't ship it back? What can I do as a seller? Will i be reimbursed? Will ebay side with me or is the case already settled by then? I hear a lot about aellers who get scammed and say that Ebay issued a refund even when they did not ship it back. How does this happen and how do I make sure that I am protected against such things?

Re: What happens if the buyer does not ship the item back?

I have 2 circumstances that just shows sellers that eBay is only about the buyers.  I sold a PROFESSIONALLY GRADED sports card.  Buyer put in a INAD case.  I shipped it with tracking.  Buyer did not ask for money to cover a return.  After some time, eBay refunded even though I never said I got the card back & the buyer was not required to show tracking.

On another occasion, buyer put in a INR case & received a refund while the item was still in transit.  There was tracking & the buyer got the item a few days later.  I never got reimbursed nor was the item returned to me.  eBay just struggled their shoulders & said it was between the buyer & myself.

Re: What happens if the buyer does not ship the item back?

Did you accept the return and pay return shipping?

Scammers usually look for items they could make some money on and I don't those toys would be on a scammers list.

If you have accepted the return, paid return shipping and the the buyer doesn't ship it back, the case will time out and close.

Have a great day.

If you accept the return and pay for a return label and the buyer does not return it, you wont be charged for the shipping label and you win the case. It will time out/close in your favor.  No refund.

In my experience, this happens about 50% of the time.

Since you shipped the INAD with tracking @sakic92710 of course eBay issued a refund when it was delivered.

@twewiking

First, make sure you do NOT send any reminders to your buyer.  Sit back and wait.  Do NOTHING but wait.

"Will i be reimbursed?"  What would Ebay need to reimburse you for at this point?  Your buyer hasn't been refunded, or did they get refunded and you didn't mention that important point.  Or are you referring to the money Ebay is holding in your MP account because the buyer filed the dispute?

"Scam" is an very overused word on the threads.  It would only apply if your buyer got your money and the product too, so far that is not happening.  You aren't currently out any money or product.

"I hear a lot about aellers who get scammed and say that Ebay issued a refund even when they did not ship it back. "  This typically will ONLY happen to sellers with a NO Return policy and they deny a INAD.  A No Return policy still has to adhere to the MBG and sellers still have to take returns on damaged or incorrect items.  The No return policy will however protect a seller on a properly filed Buyers Remorse dispute.  Those the seller can even deny if they want.

But if a seller with a No Return policy refusing to work with the buyer on the return and the buyer asks ebay to step in, Ebay will usually force the refund on the seller and won't require the buyer to return the item, mostly because the seller has already stated they don't take returns.

If the buyer has not shipped the item back to you, somewhere around couple of weeks after the buyer should have shipped the item back, contact Ebay and try to get the Dispute closed.  Or look at the dispute that was filed, it may tell you how long the buyer has to return the item.  Then just wait until after that date, Ebay will close the dispute in your favor and release the money they have on hold in your account.

Re: What happens if the buyer does not ship the item back?

Totally depends on your response.  Your best bet unless the item is cheap is to accept the return request (assuming that's what they filed) and get your item back so you can assess it to see if it's worth selling again, even if it's for a lower total.  If it's cheap, just refund them and perhaps seek reimbursement if you had insurance with your shipping carrier (USPS Ground Advantage and Priority both have some insurance applied automatically, and you can purchase more). You can't have a No Refunds policy.  You can have a No Returns policy, but that only applies to remorse returns, not if an item is Not As Described, which is the case here, and yes, eBay will refund them whether you approve it or not.  The only difference is if you get a black mark on your account for making eBay step in or not.

You need to read and understand the MBG completely.  It controls our return policies on this site.  Sellers must have polices that meet or exceed the MBG.  In a nutshell, if the buyer files a Request for Return because the package was damaged in shipment, you will be responsible for that no matter what your return policy is.  All sellers are responsible for Damage in Shipment.

Now if you had insurance on the package, get some pics from your buyer and start a claim with the carrier.  You need the buyer to work with you, so be kind and professional.

Re: What happens if the buyer does not ship the item back?

@stedi_4501

The return policies options are as follows.

  1. No Returns
  2. 30 day returns w/ buyer pays shipping
  3. 60 day returns w/ buyer pays shipping
  4. 30 day returns w/ seller pays shipping, AKA Free Returns
  5. 60 day returns w/ seller pays shipping. AKA Free Returns
  6. 14 Day returns in certain categories

With option number 1, No Returns the seller can completely deny taking a return for a Buyer's Remorse Return Request.  Or if they want to, they can accept the return and have the buyer pay the return shipping.  If the seller so chooses, they can withhold the original shipping if it was separately stated on the listing [not free shipping] when it is time to refund the buyer.

On options 2 & 3 the buyer is responsible for the return shipping on a Buyer's Remorse Return.  Plus, if the seller so chooses, they can withhold the original shipping if it was separately stated on the listing [not free shipping] when it is time to refund the buyer. As of October 1st 2019, sellers that are TRS have some additional protections as well as they can issue partial refunds if they use options 4 or 5 as their return policy.

On options 4 & 5 above, they are also known as Free Returns.  If a seller that has either of those policies, they will pay the return shipping even on a buyer's remorse return.  A seller can withhold the original shipping value from the refund if the shipping was separately stated in the listing [not free shipping].  Also, Seller’s offering options 4 or 5 have the ability to do partial refunds in certain cases if the item arrives back damaged, missing something or in a condition less than what it was sent to the buyer in, see the policy for more details, the link is below.  In the cases where a deduction in the refund is taken due to damage or other authorized reasons for a partial refund, Ebay will protect the seller from negative or neutral feedback.

ALL OPTIONS [1, 2, 3, 4 and 5] are required to process SNAD claims without exception.  Even if they are improperly filed and should have been a Buyer’s Remorse claim.

All return policies by sellers must meet or exceed what is stated in the Money Back Guarantee Policy!

14 day return policies are allowed in certain categories: Jewelry & Watches, Collectibles & Art, Cameras & Photo and Medical, Mobility & Disability Equipment.

For those with Free Return and/or TRS members with 30 day return policies, there are some added protection benefits, one of which is the ability to do a discounted refund under certain conditions.

yes, it will close out in your favor.... as many have commented. But you still will get a return noted on your metrics.

@trip98

In your Service Metrics, but it does NOT create a Defect on your Seller Dashboard.  The two are different and it is important to understand the difference between the two.
