If USPS delivers an item but fails to scan the delivery, what happens?

If the last scan is "out for delivery" in the buyer's town, is it possible that USPS never completes the delivery scan even though it delivered the item?

It will most likely update tonight, I wouldn't worry about it. DO NOT ask the buyer if he received, they'll you.

You can request to the USPS a track information investigation. Sometimes, the mail carriers know their territory and will remember if they delivered or forgot to scan the package.

It happens to me a year ago. I sent the requisition and 3 days later it was delivered. Sometimes it is still under the mail carrier's truck seat. LOL

Other than that, you are lost.

The system generally updates on its own but you can request tracking updates via the USPS T&C screen. Doing so generates an exception report that a real person has to resolve. In fact, some sellers always request updates en masse so they have an e-mailed record handy in case they need it. I believe USPS allows up to 35 tracking numbers per request. Be aware, however, that the "delivered" update may show a later date because a manual correction is done in real time, not retroactively. ~~C~~

It's entirely possible the package was delivered with carrier failing to make the final scan. In this case, you can wait forever for a system update and it will never happen!

I was evacuated from my residence, had a purchase delivery delayed due to Labor day holiday and hurricane. My street was blocked off and I wasn't home anyway. I checked on pkg status with last scan stating 'non deliverable, receptacle blocked'. Even when street reopened and pkg was delivered, that remains the last scan! Carrier failed to scan as delivered, when it actually was. You need to hope the recipient is honest and won't claim they didn't receive a pkg they actually did.

Your buyer may have received the pkg and not know there wasn't a final scan. Don't wake a sleeping bear.

That is fraud. When you file a claim, you are certifying that the package is lost. When you cheat the post office, you cheat on all taxpayers! Open a claim only if buyer tells you they never got it.

I just had the same issue (package never scanned as delivered but luckily my buyer informed me via feedback that they had received it) and here is what I did to have the issue solved within 1 hour. Call the Post Office's Consumer Affairs and explain that you sell on Ebay and if the tracking doesn't show a delivered scan then the buyer will get a freebie if they happen to file an INR case on Ebay against you - which is mail fraud. The PO's Consumer Affairs take this very seriously and are very nice (as far as my experience goes). Within 1 hour of the call, the tracking was updated to show that it was delivered. Your mileage may vary, but with my issue it worked like a charm.

I guess it takes awhile before the tracking number shows delivery . Just check back on it later . I had ordered an item on e bay one time and the tracking number showed it had been delivered to my house ,, but it wasn't here . We checked high and low on both sides of our house and nothing . So either the postal worker scanned it and then accidently left it at another house or it was stolen . When I called to report it ,, the P.O rep on the phone kept telling me the tracking number says it was delivered and acted as though they didn't believe me . Waste of time and money on that purchase . It happens .

Yes it is fraud however the USPS is not a government organization, they are a private business, perhaps the largest in the US of A but they are private and thus are not supported through taxes. I do agree it is fraud and it is wrong.

I have had packages scanned as delivered that went under the USPS drivers seat or back into the bin, got delivered the next day. I've gotten the neighbors packages delivered to me, betcha they showed as 'delivered' to them. Mistakes happen. Out of maybe 2000 buys in 2 years, ONE package has never shown up. It's out there somewhere....

It is technically not fraud, because you are only following the rules on their terms of service. You do not see it on your end, so you file the insurance. Unethical, yes, and I would not do it myself, but fraud, no.

That is not fraud. If the whereabouts of the package are not known (as in never scanned delivered) it is technically lost. Although I would not do it personally, the bottom line is that delivery confirmation is included in the price paid for postage and the USPS owes that service to the purchaser of the postage. If they do their job there is no issue.
