We got scammed by two buyers, eBay siding with the scammers.

Hello,

Recently our company got scammed by two different buyers on eBay stole from us approx $2,000 worth of items. That was a very silly scam and clearly fraudulent activities. Buyer 1 located out of the US and based in (Georgia) according to the extra 1.5% international fee we got charged. Purchased an item worth over $680 and had it shipped to his logistic/forwarders based in Brooklyn NY. Once the buyer received the item they immediately opened a return request with some kind of an excuse. We automatically approved the return and provided a USPS return label. That return label was never used and the return status was in "waiting for buyer to ship return". a week later or so we receive some envelope from USPS which we had no idea where it came from and who it came from. We opened the envelope and saw some cheap $1 item inside and had no idea what that was and who sent it so we just put it on the side thought maybe it belongs to our next door neighbors. Couple days later a case was opened by the buyer letting eBay know they returned the item and that it was delivered to us by providing eBay a USPS tracking number. We thought that was some kind of an error as eBay saw a "Delivered" tracking notice that the buyer provided them with and immediately issued a full refund to the buyer out of our account. We digged into this more and tried to find out how this item was returned back when the return status remained on "waiting for buyer to ship the return" and the label was never used. We went into the buyer's order details and guess what? We found a second tracking number that the buyer/scammer provided eBay with to let them know he shipped the return already. I then remembered we put on the side an envelope that came from USPS and checked the label attached to it and boom that was the same tracking the scammer provided ebay with. So what exactly did they do? Very simple, Since the scammer is out of state and didn't really meant to ship anything back just to steal from us and other sellers he simply went on another online market place, Purchased a $1 item and put our shipping address for that item in order to obtain a USPS tracking number and a delivery notice for eBay. YES SIMPLE AS THAT.  The same scammer from the same country "Georgia" did the same scam to our company over a year ago with the same easy trick however back then eBay protected us and confirmed that was a scam and refunded us back the money. This time we appealed the outcome decision since the case was closed under the buyer's favor but eBay decided to keep the original outcome with a refund to the scammer. We tried again emailing eBay explaining how they scammed us and manipulated eBay's system but nothing helped as it seems that nobody at eBay really cares or read our emails whatsoever and we only get replies with same templates like email bots. this scam is very stupid as eBay should understand but nobody really helped us via emails nor chat with live agents. Our company been on eBay since 2016 with 100% feedbacks and no issues whatsoever. Seems to me that since covid eBay don't really have any agents that are really live reading emails and investigating the real issues as it seems that only bots are replying back without even reading anything or replying with any sense to our emails. That was over a month ago. Moving forward, ebay invited a new scammer to their platform which purchased an item worth over $1,200 from us. We shipped the item as usual via USPS, a week later the buyer emailed us and opened a case saying they didn't receive the item yet and that was true it wasn't delivered. Buyer asked for a refund however we told the buyer to give us some time so we can investigate this issue and contact USPS. We did contact USPS and guess what they told us, The buyer contacted USPS requesting to have this package on hold for him to pickup however their request is not showing on USPS website and this buyer knew exactly that USPS website is not accurate and updated so he knew how to manipulate it. Moving forward, Buyer had it on hold in order to contact eBay to let them know that he never received the package and that he wants a refund and planned to get the refund and then stop by their local USPS office to pickup the package, However this didn't go well for them as we extended the time of our investigation with ebay in order to resolve the issue. 14 days passed and USPS returned back the package to our company since it was unclaimed by the buyer. Thank god we received it back and then we issued a refund to this buyer. However this buyer didn't give up as he made the same purchase again for the same exact item. NO we didn't ship to them again, We canceled their order. Guess what? he still didn't give up, he purchased the item under a different user id and yes we knew it was the same person but this time we did ship the item with FedEx as we knew fedex are more accurate and harder to manipulate. So we shipped fedex using signature required, Buyer received the item and signed for it. 2 weeks later opens a return request claiming that his father is saying that inside the package is not the real item they purchased, instead he claims he received a screen protector for an iPhone instead of a real iPhone device in a box. We immediately knew he's about to scam us for the $1,200 so we let eBay know about this but they told us to wait until we receive the return and then report them. So ye they returned back a stupid screen protector instead of a real iphone device and yes we reported them but guess what? eBay closed the case under the buyer's favor. We appealed the decision provided proofs of the actual weight we shipped with FedEx and actual weight we received back but again eBay decided to keep the original outcome and not refund us back the money or even ban this scammer. So ye guys just wanted to share my experience with these scams so hopefully other sellers won't fall for that  but i'm not sure how not to fall for that when you get an order and simply ship but then get this issue and ebay not protecting you as a seller. You can't even becareful as there's not much you can do. I have sent over 50 emails to ebay explaining and explaining their tricks and scams, providing photos and proofs but nobody is understanding or helping. Anyway just wanted to share this with all good sellers out there and maybe some real eBay agent will get in touch with me with a real resolution.

Wow. This is terrible and sadly we read about it here every day.  You can reach out on social media via FB:

https://www.facebook.com/eBayForBusiness/

These are US customer service agents who are actually employed by ebay.  The one's Ebay supplies us with are outsourced contract labor, located overseas.  They have no knowledge of selling on Ebay.  They read from scripts and as you pointed out, give out false or incorrect info to move you along.  They don't care about your problems because it's not their problem.

There have been many positive posts here on the forum with their ability to be helpful.

Hope this is helpful and wishing you a good outcome.

For your first buyer (who used a freight forwarder) you may get some help by using the blue SEND MESSAGE button on the link that @ckimodog  supplied to you in message #2.  You can upload photos of the return label used to show it was shipped to the forwarder, and returned from somone/somplace else.  Know this is a common scam that has been going on for years.  Regular customer service that you get on call back or chat will not help you since they apparently cannot intervene and can only look to see that "something was delivered somewhere". They don't even look to see if the return tracking was initiated before the buyer even received the item, or was for a 50 lb. box while the item was only 2 ounces.   You can read more about it here by searching "cheap trinket"  return scam.

Provide in the message portal your user ID, name, contact info,  that the issue involves a FREIGHT FORWARDER, and a brief timeline of what has happened so far.

I would submit this for the one case at a time.  After you report the buyer.

The second one involves a domestic sale.  Even though the scam is basically the same there is no seller protection for "faulty returns".   In general, it is common knowledge that buyers can return anything they want.  The only thing that counts is the tracking number that shows "delivered'.  You would have been better off if they used a tracking number that was NOT intended for you, and sent the package to an alternate address in your zipcode.

You can try to submit the information as with the first issue, but don't count on much assistance.  The weight discrepancy may help.  It would might help you to file (since you have the buyer's name and address) with law enforcement venues.

Good luck, and let us know how it turns out.

I am really sorry this happened to you, but you should know that paragraphs and punctuation are your friend.  Some people who might have good advice for you are not going to bother reading that huge wall of text.

Thanks for the advise however we don't have facebook account. We need eBay to help us not anyone on facebook even though it can lead to some eBay specialist. eBay should have US agents who deals with these kind of fraud activities in order to protect their sellers. I wish it was easy enough to get in touch with an eBay specialist who can assist with these issues like it is easy enough to scam sellers on eBay.

That's true, However if they took a minute to read who we explain the exact scam they can easily avoid it and save their sellers not to leave their platform because as of now we are having our marketing department broadcast the scams that are going on eBay in order to save our sellers that are in the same industry as we are as we all know each other very well as we closing deals on daily basis and helping each other. Even though we are also competitors on eBay we still have our respect for each other as we are mainly work on wholesale deals together. Will be very bad for eBay to lose around 35-40 top rated sellers from their platform just because they are short on US agents who should take care of these issues.

Re: We got scammed by two buyers, eBay siding with the scammers.

There are some very sophisticated scams going on using tracking numbers and shippers. These scam artists have figured out a way to manipulate the system and steal money. It happens with sellers too. My last two purchases I was given fake (non-working) tracking numbers. When I wrote to the first seller they said: "USPS forgot to scan it" or they just ignored my requests for working tracking numbers.  In the second case, the seller sent me a completely fake tracking number that is not recognized as valid by USPS web site.  But, his item arrived at my house very quickly. I think that this is how he gets around paying eBay shipping fees. The package was sent in a bubble wrapped envelope with very cheap postage ($1.68) and no tracking number.  I think the seller issues the buyer a fake number and then ships it via USPS outside of the eBay system to avoid paying fees. He tells customers to just ignore notifications from eBay.  His scam works because he ships the items and they arrive quickly.  Most people give him good ratings and say "Fast shipping" in their review.  They get a good deal so they don't complain.  Ebay needs to have a whole security team full of people doing nothing but investigating tracking number and post office scams. My suggestion is that they should start by validating tracking numbers to make sure they are legit.

@qubocell

Yes, they should, but they don't.   The US agents who can deal with these issues are found via the social media links.  You can make a facebook account, and not have to participate in any facebook activities like making friends or sharing recopies etc. .  It is simply a means to get the help that you need, and your choice of course if you don't want to use this and continue to deal with outsourced foreign call center reps instead.,

1.  What s/he said ^^^.

2. As others said, formatting is your friend.  I'm fairly used to borderline illegible handwriting and blocks of text, but wading through that was a chore.

3. Getting a FB account is easy, and you can even make one only for your business with a link to your sales page on eBay and other sales venues.

4. I do not believe English is your first language; if not I'd get a native speaker with some writing proficiency to proof your outgoing important messages before sending.  Saves grief.

I agree and sadly outsourced overseas CS help is everywhere.  AT&T, Paypal, Amex, etc. Do you have a twitter account?  There's a similar help site that is US located...I don't have it written down in my notes, but perhaps someone else can add it for you.

Again,  Good luck to you.

Make an account. Ebay for business are ebay employees not hired out CS reps.
