Was I hacked by a buyer??

I had an item listed with a best offer option. The buyer sent me an offer and   wrote a note along with the offer stating  he would also cover the shipping cost. I accepted and sent out the invoice without the full amount of the shipping and the buyer paid that. After getting back from the post office I contacted the buyer and asked for the additional money for shipping. Needless to say he refused..saying it was too much money. I then contacted ebay and put in a dispute. Somehow the note form the best offer now was changed to " I WOULD COVER THE COST OF SHIPPING " it was in my ebay name!! Has anyone had anything like this??

@ livadia
As the story unfolds, I agree. Both parties were equally involved in the transaction that went south, although the seller certainly duped himself by "trusting" that the buyer would pay a second, separate shipping invoice.
Either way, seller wasn't hacked, he just has a hard time accepting his own responsibility.

Maybe someone (not the OP) who claims this is a BO glitch could explain one more time how the OP's name got substituted for the buyer's name in the offer to pay shipping? That's a remarkably selective "glitch".

It still looks to me like the OP doesn't understand how he set up his listing (which, BTW, wasn't an auction, even thought the OP keeps calling it that).

Sure, why not?

Summary:

OP did not set up the shipping portion of their listing properly and there was also miscommunication (or rather lack of clarification) between both buyer and seller regarding shipping. Bottom line is seller made an error and paid for it with expensive out-of-pocket shipping. Nobody is disputing that, not even the OP at this point in the conversation.

Regarding the glitch, the Best Offer message shows the note as "message from [seller]" when it's supposed to say "message from [buyer]". The form is inputting the wrong ID next to the note. Another poster mentioned they saw another thread where this was mentioned recently. I just verified the glitch myself - see below.

This glitch does not change the outcome of who shoulders the shipping cost. The OP is not arguing that point anymore.

The glitch did not suddenly appear, the best offer message received by the OP was displayed that way from the beginning but the OP didn't notice until shipping became a question and they went back to re-read the message. At that point they noticed the glitch and thought that it meant they were hacked by the buyer even though they weren't.

There are 2 best offer message formats that I have seen. The one the OP showed a screenshot of is a newer version of the form message. It needs to be corrected to populate the buyer's name where it's currently populating the seller's name next to the added note.

I just had a friend submit a $1.00 best offer on one of my items as a test so I could see the message that appears (the offer was immediately rejected). Below is a screenshot. Instead of showing the ID of my friend who made the offer and wrote the note it says that I (the seller) am the one who wrote the message. It should say Message from [buyer's ID] but it clearly shows Message from [my/seller's ID].

Thanks! So everythings resolved. That was quite a winding path.

#3#4#5- Once again... my MAIN CONCERN WAS IF I WAS HACKED INTO!!! Only after numerous posters started to analyze my auction did it become about MY SALE..only after numerous emails with the BUYER did he then say" I WOULD HAVE SENT SHIPPING LABELS" OBVIOUSLY if he said that from the BEGINING I would have took the labels..

Even though some posters haven't moved on, yes, it's essentially resolved.

The glitch was reported to Trinton upthread so hopefully he'll submit a report to the tech team to correct the Best Offer message.

Trinton, if you're reading this and need any additional info I am happy to forward you the best offer e-mail on this account so you can see more details than that tiny screenshot above.

@thegoodthebadtheugly Don't even bother arguing about this anymore or respond to those who are digging at you. The matter is settled even if some posters don't want to move on. You've handled your transaction so it's a done deal. On top of that, the glitch in the message has been reported to eBay so thanks for bringing it to light because I'm sure you were not the only seller confused by it.

Thanks for verifying that. I can see two ways of fixing the message: either change "from" to "for," or change "[my/seller's ID]" to "[buyer's ID]." In hindsight, it would probably make more sense to correct the line to read "Message from [buyer's ID]," since of course you may be getting offers and messages from more than one buyer simultaneously, so you want to keep straight who you're hearing from.

I can't tell from the cropped screenshots, but does it matter whether you're viewing that incoming offer on a desktop or on a mobile device? ISTR that the OP's screenshot showed eBay Mobile. Is the message wrong in both Mobile and "Classic" desktop formats?

Was I hacked by a buyer??

Hey AC, Yes, that's what I was saying the other day about the for/from and buyer vs seller. I agree that it's the ID that needs to be corrected.

To clarify, the OP's screenshot was from mobile. Mine was from a computer. It's not just the e-mail though - if you go directly to eBay messages it's exactly the same. The device and browser don't matter. It's an error in the message template where's it's pulling in seller's ID instead of buyer's ID.

I asked my friend to forward me the buyer's version of the offer submitted message and on their end it's correctly showing that the buyer wrote the comment. It's only the seller's view of the offer received message that's reversed.

I am glad to see this settled.

@copper.boom

Good morning Copper !!!

I wonder if the name switching is only a mobile app glitch....

I am now on a little tablet thingy...

All my messages are from ebay... ie copper has sent an offer or message.

All looks normal on my end.

When I first found the boards, it was the "tools and apps" I was looking for.

Talk about glitches... I don't think the mobile app has ever been glitch free.

They fix one glitch,  but in the process,  create 4 new glitches.

My wife has an Obama phone, and it can get online to ebay.

But on a three inch screen....  not so good.

There is a glitch on the shipping section for multi qty items.

But that glitch is if you leave the "each additional item" blank

it will auto fill to the basic shipping cost.

@sockmonkeydave Mornin' Dave! No, not just a mobile glitch. It's in the message template and translates to all platforms.

To be clear, this error is only on the new Best Offer message template the one that says "Good News!".

The old message template that says "Hi, you have received an offer" displays correctly.

Your account is older so you'll see the older form, Dave.

That's not a glitch - it's how it's supposed to work. eBay assumes that your second item will cost the same amount to ship as the first item. If it's different then you as a seller can revise it as necessary. Since many of us combine shipping we will offer a lower cost in the shipping field for additional items whenever possible.

lol  I guess there are benifits of being "old"

But dang... it would be nice if ebay was consistant.

It's like speed limits... snort.

Was it 55, or 65, or 85 mph...

well... when were you born.

When I was young,  years ago... the beer age was 19.

If you could hold a gun, and go to nam

you could drink a beer...

then Ronnie got in office.

And beer age went to 21.

There should be only one set of rules.

I wonder if that is an eBay typo in the Offer notification form meant to say message FOR, not message from?

What does it say on your other offer messages? Message FOR or message FROM? Do you have any others to compare?

For the record, it still doesn't matter at this point what was said in the message. As noted above, it's not enforceable unless it's included in the listing. Next time update the shipping cost on the listing before the buyer purchases the item.

I would look it up on a real computer, NOT the ebay app.

i read all.. the op said the buyer sent a note and said he'd paid the shipping.... the op  didn't know what his listing actually meant...and what an offer means--with the fact that shipping is actually not part of it) but he sent the item , then because of the "note" was waitnig for the rest.. he screwed up, and just can't accept he didn't have a clue what he was doing... the seller messed it up..and i have no pity..they need to stand by there listing..or cancel it and take the dings... they chose to send an hope
