I posted about this 6 months ago. I listed an item last week for the first time in months and I got the same worded message again from A different buyer. This scam must be rampant if I’ve got this message 5 different times in the past. Why does eBay even allow you to say the word Venmo , this is a payment service that is only recommended for people who know and trust eachother.
how I guess the scam works. Buyer sends you payment on Venmo Upfront, you ship the item, Buyer calls Venmo saying their account got hacked and the money gets returned... profit

Definitely looks like a scam. Not sure why they need to use Venmo when they can use eBay, PayPal, or their credit card to rip sellers off.

"Yes! I do take Venmo; however, first I'll need your Venmo username and password, along with your social security number and bank account number (including your online banking username and password). When I've received that information, we can do some business!"
"Or, if you prefer, you could pay with gift cards. Go to your local gift-card seller and buy gift cards in an amount equal to the cost of the laptop plus shipping. Email me all the gift card numbers, and, as soon as I've verified the numbers, I'll send out that laptop!"

This is definatley a scam! Glad you didn't fall for it.
A friend I know has Venmo and it is really geared towards paying friends and family, people you know and are familiar with.
He was sent this same sort of message you were. He provided his info and the buyer paid him. He shipped the item.
Then a week later, the payment was removed due to payment being made from a stolen account.
He tried contacting the buyer and no luck. Buyer disappered. The address he shipped to was a mail forwarder. He totally got scammed in more ways then one. He ended up learning the hard way. Out money and his item.
Hope this helps!

I would guess you would get a phony Venmo notification saying you were paid.
As suggested, though Venmo is a PayPal company, it is intended as a "friends and family" type app system. Typically, funds actually sent to someone are of the "cash" nature and not recoverable by the sender. Maybe that has changed if you can substantiate your Venmo account was hacked.
