Variations and quantities

I am selling a poster with the options/variations as paper or laminated. When I click on the preview, it shows that under quantity there is 1, but 2 available. When I am listing different variations, is ebay saying I have one of each variation available? And if I sell one of those variations (lets say a laminated poster), that variation is gone and the listing will remain with just the "paper" option left?

The quantity is the total quantity so 2 is correct. If one is purchased, the quantity will be changed to 1. The item that is out of stock will still appear in the variation, however it will be grayed out and buyers are unable to select it.

It would be nice if they had "options" instead of variations. I print these posters up as the orders come in. And I know if someone buys one variation, the next buyer may want the same one and I would just have to create a new listing. Makes more sense for me to create multiple listings. One laminated and one paper.

Since you print these as you sell them I would

• Use GTC (good til cancelled) and also
• use a higher quanitity for each variation.  When that variations quantity gets low you would just edit the listing and add more inventory to that variation.
• I would also use the zero quantity active listing feature  -  Click here to learn more about this feature

Every time you relist a listing you start over with some but not all important factors eBay uses to help determine search placement.  GTC listing do not actually relist.  GTC listing renew themselves so they do not lose this buyer engagement history. 

• BTW I looked at a few of your listings but did not see any with variations? 
• Are you sure you have them set up this way? 
• You should be able to look at the active listing page and see a drop down box showing the variations you set up. 
• If you are not seeing this then you do not have a variation listing set up correctly.

Thank you @goodluckselling I do not have any listings with variations.  I was starting to list one when I had the question above. And I did not know I could change the quantity while a listing was active. That makes a big difference. Are there any additional fees when increasing the quantity?

No extra fees to add quanitites.  The place you start your variations is on the advanced listing tool found at the top of the page under listings (seller hub).

Look right below the title area in the listing form and you should have an option to add variations.

Also you need to make sure the shipping charges are the same for all variations in this listing.  Example - Paper print might get rolled up and shipped in a round container versus a laminate one being shipped flat.  If there is a cost difference you need to settle on one rate.

Once you've payed the listing fee for the month, you aren't required to pay additional fees. Unless you decide to use one of the add-ons (Bold titles) then you'll be charged the fee. Changing the listing description, photos, and quantity will not require additional fees. I would recommend using a variation listing. If items are purchcased through the listing, the "Sold Quantity" will be the total quantity of items sold. So instead of having 10 items sold in 2 different listings, you'll have 20 items sold in a variation listing. If one of the items is out of stock, the quantity sold will remain the same. The higher the sold quantity the more appealing your listing may look to your buyers.
