VAULT

If you need a visual aide as to priorities of the current leadership of this company, look no further than this.

Buyer fees, seller fees, transfer fees, fees fees and fees. I admit I am no expert in the sports card, trading cards area, however I have seen high grade cards sell for real money.  To many high grade Chinese counterfeits, and new tricks in that market for me nowadays. While I may be missing something I just dont see it, for eBay appears a waste of capital to me, and I KNOW Iam missing nothing about the fees, ceiling looks to be $50.00 or so. Why would a seller wish to do that? Safe deposit box at my  bank costs about that monthly, and it will hold much more than one ball card. If I had a 100k ball card would I trust eBay with it?? They will enable a 15 year old Malaysian kid to return fraud/ROB A SELLER and they want to hold my 100k item and charge me MORE FEES FOR SELLING IT..??? I see NOTHING in this roll-out about insurance, or eBay assuming a fiduciary roll. Just more if something goes wrong eBay is not to blame, in the fine print.. Buyers and sellers, LOOKING FOR VALUE.. in these CRAZY economic times,  eBay could be doing SO MUCH BETTER.. Just like the coastal elites that brought you gas at 5 dollars a gallon, and 8-9% inflation, and a LOOMING financial meltdown. The elites running this company have rolled their pipedream out, because they know best and it appears  the attractive young lady that has done VERY well for herself in this market, and was BRIEFLY employed by eBay, bruised up some boardroom egos.. Throwing good money after bad fellas leave it alone.  Stock, earrings, and growth still flat, better get all the time you can in your vault toybox whatever you got going on there dear leadership. Maybe that talented young lady will employ some of you next year..

Re: VAULT

eBay is focusing on the short term Final Value fees and ignoring the long term damage this will cause to the eBay brand. When the inflated value of these items collapses, the buyers will become irate and never shop on eBay again in retaliation.

A separate site for the sale and purchase of speculative items should be created.

Re: VAULT

eBay has been in the business of charging fees in exchange for hosting listed items since day one.

Re: VAULT

I would've liked a low end 'vault' just for quick flipping raw comics or loose toys, that is if I would be able to write the listings and choose BIN prices myself. Sort of like valet, but not stupid. Buy it on ebay, ship to them, they'd do the pics and handling, while I'd do the thinking.

I'm too dang sick to deal with all the photos, storage, crazy people, packing/shipping etc anymore, but the grading angle knocks me out of the box for comics and toys. CGC fees are murder these days. I understand it, though; sports cards has been a minefield for some time.

Oh well, maybe I can do some card business again when the threshold gets lower...

Re: VAULT

What bothers me most about the idea of the eBay Vault:

Why is my product more secure in the eBay Vault, than under my own roof?

Didn't anyone at eBay HQ think this one through just a little bit better?!?

I think the idea is for people that just want to own or invest in the thing. And not actually have it. Or don't care if they have it.

Someone or multiple people go in on something worth 4/5/6+ figures and sit on it for a bit and then later sell it. Ownership just gets transferred to that person or persons and they can decide what they want to do with it. Keep it there or have it shipped to them.

I don't know what the fees are. But eBay must have put a bit of money into it with hiring and whatnot. They aren't the first to do it at least (the storage part). So they're misty be a market for this sort of thing. And I guess the idea of simply transferring ownership of something on a shelf may be a selling point for some.

Re: VAULT

please be my friend. please. i was just talking about this, not as eloquently, but i was on a birdie social media site mentioning the vault & telling the spill over from this community exactly what you just said. not as articulate by any means, but yes. so refreshing to read this poetry you have written & art displayed upon this community. someone who can see the truth… warms my heart. thank you for this post. Search for “bling” on those “counterfeit” cards in that “vault” indeed! hope i run into you again, good sir! AMEN! 💖

Re: VAULT

The vault business with the buy/sell without physical possession reminds me of the Tulip Craze - a lot of speculation.

Re: VAULT

@chapeau-noir  I think The Vault concept contains  a buffer ... trading cards could end up being another Tulip craze , but there will likely always be SOME asset that could be stored there that is appreciating in value as cards are declining.  Also, very often with collectibles, even if the bottom falls out of the specific market generally, the very top items retain some value, often considerable value. Even today, for example, there are a few Beanie Babies that are worth a fair bit.

So, ebay can just adapt the Vault to include whatever is "hot" at the moment. The speculators might lose money, but ebay probably won't. Kind of like Vegas...gamblers win, gamblers lose, but gamblers continue to gamble, and the casinos continue to make money.

No question that speculation is fueling a lot of this, and The Vault is designed in part to further fuel speculation, with its emphasis on buying and easy flipping, rather than on actual collecting.  Speculation like this has a long history, but it seems to be a particularly good fit in modern America.

Re: VAULT

If I read the "Vault" announcement correctly, one benefit is no sales tax to the buyer. I think it has to do with the item purchased never being in the possession of the buyer, & being in a no sales tax state.

The "Vault" seems to be similar to the Freeports used by high end art collectors to avoid sales tax & store pricey artworks.

Do a search for "Delaware Freeport art", lots of articles out there.

You will never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy. We must be cautious.

No tax : is due to were the item would be sent.  No tax yet on marketplace facilitators in that state.

Re: VAULT

@my-cottage-books-and-antiques   I understand the concept of the vault itself, it's simply the speculation on whatever is in it unseen that reminds me of the Craze.  And you are right, this type of investment does seem to be a good fit in the modern world with its sheetcoin and ponzi schemes.

Re: VAULT

another reason to use the vault VS home safe is that damage/theft  could occur outside of the vault when shipping

if the buyers and sellers never take the card home then its well protected at the ebay vault

Re: VAULT

A few comments.

No danger of an INAD from something already in the vault.

Specialty trading card sites are terrible, they become an instant race to the bottom because they identify every single card in a manner where whoever is looking at yours sees every other available one, and they tend to have automated tools to keep undercutting prices until nothing is left. I specialize in cards, but I won't sell on Beckett or Tcgplayer.

I hate post 2000 sports cards in general. Seemingly every single card of note is a unique snowflake that very rarely sells (or will have zero sales history at all) because of all the variants. Prices of the same card might swing 1000 percent from one sale to the next, makes it difficult for me to even make fair offers on cards for resale "Hmm, looks like this one has recently sold for $16.25, $1.19 and $4.75."
