Upgraded to Premium Store - Views & Sales PLUMMETED!

Hi there!

I upgraded my store to a Premium Store at the beginning of February and my sales have PLUMMETED! It's clear that my items either newly or relisted since I've upgraded my store are getting very little visibility and eBay customer service is not helping at all. They keep telling me the same story that I'm selling things people don't care about or that my prices are high but that is not the case. I'm selling the same items which previously flew off of my shelves and in many cases I'm the lowest-cost seller. My question is whether the community thinks that the algorithm "punishes" smaller sellers within the Premium Store category by giving less visiblity. I was right on the cusp of benefitting by upgrading but only have approximately 300 items listed vs the average of 1000 of other Premium stores. Does anyone know this to be true? I've done everything from looking at the HTML coding of my items, comparing all specs against other sellers and even against my own items with higher views and I'm at a loss. The items are indeed visible if I search but I truly believe they are not getting cross-promoted/"Pushed" in the same way since I upgraded. Also, when I have sales or promoted listings, it doesn't increase my traffic like it used to. And the WORST NEWS - When I went to downgrade my store, because I signed up for an annual subscription during a trial period, they want to charge me a penalty fee of several hundred dollars. So I'm paying more to sell less, and to downgrade they want to charge me huge fees. Horrible eBay customer service. Please help! I'll take any advice I can get! Are there services that are credible to review my listings to see the cause?

The only advice I would give you is to downgrade your store to basic when given the chance May 1st, and learn how to use the auction listing format to get the most out of your subscription fee.

Listing nothing but Lenox kind of paints you into a corner you as well as 100s of other have the same stuff listed 186,966 items with a average of 500 Lenox items sold daily the supply far exceeds the demand. Toss in GTC private listings colored font 60 day returns free shipping just to much stuff going on for the normal person to absorb...

It is possible, when you switch store plan,it could take a while for traffic to pickup/

I just downgraded my store and I have to pay like $150 penalty to EBAY.

Put lime in the coconut and call me in the morning !

Quite a few sellers have come to the forum complaining that their sales plummeted after upgrading to Premium.

I'm beginning to wonder if Cassini resets something when it sees a different class of subscription. If so, the seller might have to build up "search engine brownie points" again to regain visibility.

@newyorksalesqueen Increase your number of listings by a couple hundred.

If you don't see sales pickup then you can downgrade your store May 1st. Early termination fees are waived for the month of May this year because of store fee increases. If you're on a monthly plan you can downgrade to basic at any time.

A few weeks ago a poster here on this board bragged about how her sales had taken off after upgrading to a premium store.  I could understand this if one increased the number of items listed, which it didn't appear she had done, otherwise I don't see why it would make any difference.

In this situation, it makes even less sense that sales would plummet, but I guess when it comes to ebay search--who knows.   I just can't imagine how a store level would affect search of an item.

I think you could also do with a regular account and lower limits - even giving up a store.  You have a lot of holiday ornaments so maybe focus on more seasonal items - wedding, baby, summer, beach.  You have tons of listings but most are out of season.  You are paying for extra listings that dont matter.

It's a shame you did this when you could have waited 1 more month and downgraded or even cancelled with no penalty May 1.  This is due to the increas in store fees taking affect that month. My guess is many sellers aren't aware of the fee increase (perhaps forgot or didn't read the spring update) or don't know they can cancel without penalty in May due to the fee changeover.

I'm sorry but CS is mostly right. Lenox is out of vogue and Christmas items are out of season. Most folks won't start picking up Christmas items again until July. Many things that sold before, no longer do. The market is flooded with items that are less sought after.

With only 300 items listed, just 50 more than basic store allows, you'd have been better off keeping the basic store and waiting for a listing promo......I've received many lately.  Otherwise, pump up your listing volume to use as much as the allotment as possible.

Consider using the May grace period to downgrade back to basic store. The upcoming months are only going to get slower. I had a basic store in Jan/Feb and cancelled it asap, as it was costing me more in fvf's than without a store, due to the low sales volume. The .85% discount wasn't worth it, I had to do about $2000 in sales just to break even. I only opened it because I had some higher ticket items I thought would sell. Needless to day, they didn't, even when I had the best prices right in line with the previously solds! I ended up selling them at a Flea Market.

I know this is of little consolation, but don't feel bad, as there are sellers with thousands of items listed who come to these boards and state they've sold little to nothing! The problem is ebay has long been an oversaturated marketplace, this isn't about to change. It's very hard for buyers to find items among the clutter and the luck of the draw for a seller to be found. It was exciting when one used to be able to list and sell within a week, now it can take months or even years! Price doesn't always make a difference. Older people are downsizing, not acquiring anything (they're a huge percentage of those selling here, often the items which are out of vogue and it becomes a race to the bottom in pricing). Most younger people simply don't want to buy anything outside of tech and necessities. This leaves a huge hole in seeking buyers for many items.

I feel promoted listings to be a waste of time. They only further clog up the search, since ebay foolishly lists them twice! I've been seeing the 'Promoted' listing items last in search lately!! This is opposite of what ebay was promising.

My only advice would be to look at selling items that are less collectible in nature. If your going to do collectibles, they should be items from the 1980s and 1990s, as people who grew up then are looking for these items. But even these need to be selective. It's simply hard to find items to sell that aren't already flooding the market place. Everyone wants to be a seller these days!

Overall, I think you should list like crazy through April, in order to take advantage of your listing allotment. Then downgrade or cancel May 1 before they charge you for another month. They pro-rate days.

eBay has a "Open" in  the Las Vegas off season this July where you won't need a Parka.

This might be an opportunity to talk to others about your eBay selling.

Check it out;

Because they already 'gotcha' as soon as it was upgraded with a yearly contract.

@lovtaco0, I saw that termination fees are being waived in May. I’ve been month-to-month Basic for 3-4 months. I have a batch listings that just expired, but usually run close to my max 250. I’ve been doing prep for new listings, thinking I’d rotate in the new listings and let most of the expireds wait. It would take a LOT of hustle, but if everything currently available was listed, I’d easily be at 500-600, which doesn’t include expired Christmas items.

The ability to downgrade in May makes me wonder about upgrading to Premium on an annual contract NOW, take April & May to see what happens,  and downgrade back to Basic the end of May if sales don’t support the upgrade. I’d save $30 in fees for a 2-month ”trial”, if I downgrade before the end of May. Your thoughts?

I haven’t seen the other posts about Premium tanking views & sales...need to do some reading.

I think that's smart. My wife is doing the same thing because she wants to test the Premium store.

Thanks for the info about May, I didn't realize that. I am been pondering going from a Premium to a Basic store. I have 600 listings; if I could predict which of 250 would sell I would downgrade, but I just don't know. I boosted my listings these past few months but I am a very slow lister. 1000 listing proves elusive.
