Am I confused about PayPal's seller protection?
I received an email from PayPal indicating my funds were being held because they recieved notice from the buyer's credit card company that the purchase was an unauthorized transaction.
I have been through this twice before. It is my understanding that if I mailed to the address on file and the transaction is available for seller protection, I am covered.
Yet, when I spoke with a customer service representative at PayPal I was told they abide by the credit card company's decision. I asked to have the funds put back in my account by explaining that I had done everything I was obligated to do. To my surprise, the funds were put back within a few minutes.
Question: Did I speak with an inexperienced customer service representative at PayPal or am I not understanding the PayPal Seller Protection Agreement? The customer service representative told me that seller protections means only that they will argue my case to the credit card company, but again, they abide by the credit card company's decision?????

I have had a number of those over the years.
When they first get the protest they deduct the funds and hold them aside.
If you can prove, via a shipping tracking number, that the item was delivered to the address on the Paypal screen then, even if the credit card company finds against you, the money will be returned.
HOWEVER if you do nothing and do not provide proof of delivery then you lose. So respond ASAP to protect yourself.
If you sent to some other address than what is on the Paypal screen you also lose. Which is why so many here will caution you about changing the address after the sale.

As long as you did everything correctly as it sounds like you have.
PP has to cover any loss that occurs, not you.
That is why your funds are now available again.
They always freeze until you respond with tracking showing proof of shipping to PP transaction details addy.
I always call and have them release my funds after I respond to the case online.
There is no need for them to hold *your* funds on a case that you are covered for under their guidelines.

When I have gotten unauthorized chargeback, I enter the tracking number and copy and paste all the relevant info into the case and submit it. I don't bother calling because I hate telephones lol. My money has always been released within a few hours. The longest it's taken was four days.
The vast majority of unauthorized chargebacks are from the cardholder not recognizing the charge. Log in to Paypal. Go to your profile and select my selling tools from the left sidebar. You'll see credit card statement name. Click update and you can see what the buyer sees on their CC statement. You can change it to something that makes sense, but you have a limited amount of characters to do so.

Wow this happened to me too. Paypal automatically took the money from my account, and the buyer was able to keep my vintage hft item free of charge.

Actually you don’t need proof of delivery on a unauthorized use chargeback. You need proof of shipment to the address on the PayPal payment.

Actually, unless policy has changed, proof of mailing to the address on the PayPal transaction is all that is required for seller protection in such cases. Proof of delivery is not required. PayPal seller protection should protect the seller in this case.
