USPS returned item as unclaimed, best option moving forward?

I sold an item in mid February and shipped it USPS priority mail. They attempted the first delivery but did not leave the package. The tracking was updated to “undeliverable/receptacle full”. The buyer messaged me rather disgruntled wondering why it wasn’t left. I replied simply that it was out of my control.

the tracking was then updated with a message indicating recipient either needed to pick it up from the post office or request a redelivery attempt. They did neither and after a few weeks the package arrived back at my house marked as unclaimed.

other than the first message on the day of the first delivery I have not heard from the buyer. Nada. There’s no claims either.

the item is worth a few hundred bucks and the shipping was a hefty 60-ish (which the buyer paid in addition to the sales price; ie not free shipping).

so now what? I’m concerned I’ll be out both shipping and eBay fees that add up to over 100.00. So not sure how to minimize my losses here. Any advice? Again, I’ve heard nothing from the buyer for three weeks.

I would recommend issuing a refund, minus shipping as you did nothing wrong, but you have your item back. You should be refunded your fees except the $0.30 per item fee, which is a fairly small loss.

In this situation Ebay allows a seller to refund less all fees including postage.
