i recently shipped an item to a customer and tracking says it ended up "out for delivery" and "awaiting delivery scan". i shipped it on May 18, on May 21 it was "out for delivery", and later that night it was "awaiting delivery scan". on May 22 there was a tracking "alert" saying there had been no update since "awaiting delivery scan". I quickly went to start a missing mail search, but was unable to, the tracking # was already associated with an open case,
and it said to try again in a few days until after the "open case" is resolved. I thought it was somehow automatically started on my behalf somehow by the post office, since there was an "alert" on the package. It was not, and i thought i was inquiring about the package as its "owner", i was not, i did not get the results of the first case and was not told who opened it. I spoke directly with the supervisor of the postman who delivered the package, and he remembered it. I believe the buyer simply opened the "informed delivery" app, and clicked on the " i did not receive this item" checkbox, which initiates a missing mail case, like the one i had to wait for to finish. it also prevents tracking from showing "delivered".

@lja440- as a postal carrier can you provide some info on this? I never heard that a claim filed by a buyer would prevent a delivered status on tracking.

It shouldn't prevent the delivery scan showing. But I admit our old scanners are getting glitchy, mine often needs to be forced to download. Or I'll get a call from the Post Office that my scanner hasn't shown any movement for over an hour. (it''s still scanning and tracking movement, just not transmitting it).
I would call the Postmaster and see if they can force and update on the delivery scan.
