It looks like it's in Salt Lake City. Should be out for delivery today.

No, they're not. They haven't been a part of the government since 1970.

Sure they are. From the horse's mouth:

It is 10 days before Christmas, the busiest shipping season ever.
UPS is forcing their drivers to work 70 hour weeks. The postal service here has stripped out the parcels and are delivering those seperate of the regular mail.
I had boxes picked up Tuesday and they still haven't even shown as accepted. They're likely sitting on the dock at the local office.
Everybody is busy.

They are an independent federal agency, they are not part of the executive, judicial or legislative branch of the government. USPS, Social Security, CIA, GSA, FTC, Maritime Commission, etc. are all examples of independent agencies. They are NOT part of the government. They are, however, controlled in many ways by the government and their rules are considered law. Technicality? Perhaps, but they aren't the government.
Anyway, with the USPS expected to handle 15 BILLION pieces of mail and 850 million packages between Thanksgiving and Christmas, there are bound to be mistakes, and yes, it sucks when those mistakes happen to you. Been there, done that , got the tshirt.

According to the USPS site I have a package coming today.
But usually that would mean it was on the truck. All I am seeing is the 5th in a row on its way to its destination.
And it has to be signed for. I hate to waste an entire day if it is not coming today.

What i mean is that the USPS often gives lousy service because they are not a "for profit" entity and the people who work there often don't care, and are not at risk of losing job. You lose your job at UPS or FedEx if you don't perform as expected.
Proof: the vast people of people who go into a large city post office complain about the amount of time it takes to wait on line, the employees often don't care, etc etc. Here in NYC the post offices are a mess. Similar to long lines and clerks taking too many breaks at the DMV...
Yes they usually do their job faithfully, but its bungled bureaucracy.

I'll agree with you on the DMV - but I haven't found any lazy employees at the Post Office in all the years I've gone there. It surprises me that people can't equate busiest season of the year with the possibility of mistakes being made.

Problem with Post Office, at least my local one, is there are a lot out on sick leave, and not being replaced.
Our postal person has been out for over a month. Instead of training someone else for her route, it is split up among existing employees who do it at the end of their routes.
Mail is being delivered at 6:30 PM in the dark by postal workers who do not know the route. Packages are being put in the wrong boxes because they probably cannot see the names and others are not finishing the routes when it becomes too late to do so.

Totally agree. The sheer volume increase during this time definitely up the ante that a mistake may be made.
I sent a few boxes to family and friends this year, but missed my self imposed deadline of Thanksgiving due to illness. Still, the packages were received this week, so I can rest easy knowing they received their Christmas gifts timely, thank God!

The tracking for any packages I've sent out in the past two weeks has been showing the tracking as forwards, backwards, and upside-down.....basically all over the place. For any sales that have trickled through, I've sent messages to the Buyers warning of the delays...and most have been okay with that by saying they are not in any rush to receive the items. For a couple of higher priced sales, I bumped up the shipping to Expedited for a couple of extra dollars, and n/c to the Buyer to hopefully nudge them along a bit faster, and buy me some peace of mind.
I noticed that the CPS and USPS sites I use have been flashing a warning that they are now experiencing a record-breaking increase in shipping volumes. My local postal delivery worker has been doing deliveries on Sundays for the past two weeks, and the post office has so many packages stacked up that the storage area is full and they are now overflowing into the store itself. Last night I revised all my listings to read that 'as of December 13 there is no longer any guarantee of Christmas delivery'......inotherwords, all bets are off.

And you sold the tshirt on eBay, USPS delivered it after the last estimated delivery date, eBay refunded the buyer, and the cycle started again?
