UPS overcharging on golf clubs.

Three times now I have had ups add an additional charge from what ebay quoted. The first time ebay gave me a credit back for most of the amount. The next two times I measured the packages at the ups dropoff and took pictures. All the dimensions and weight were entered correctly and I added an inch on each dimension to be safe. Ups keeps upcharging my shipments. Anyone have any idea what's going on before I contact ebay again to try to get my money back?

Yes.... eBay's calculator for UPS and FedEx doesn't work right. It's been a long standing problem, with FedEx being the worst.

FedEx is awful. The last thing I shipped with them, the calculator was off by $40. 😡

Re: UPS overcharging on golf clubs.

UPS isn't overcharging, Ebay is underquoting. Ebay doesn't actually dictate what carriers charge, they just muss up the estimates.

It is always best to check the rates with weight, dimensions etc. with the actual source (not ebay's guess)  before listing.

That's not a viable option. You list the dimensions and weight when you list, and pick the carrier.  You have NO idea where your buyer is going to live, UNTIL you sell it.  You don't have the option of coming back to the buyer after the sale and asking for shipping money. It doesn't work that way here.

Again, the problem is eBay's shipping calculator. When I use Pirate Ship, I have NEVER had a charge after buying the label.  Your suggestion doesn't really help anyone.

Re: UPS overcharging on golf clubs.

As previous post has mentioned, that doesn't really help until after the buyer has paid for item/shipping. If this is the case, as I have yet to sell a golf club myself (since I don't know how to get the specific descriptors to my items searchable in regards to golf clubs to see for myself), it's entirely on ebay to charge the exact cost of the shipment in question (assuming you are putting in the dimensions and weight of the box you are going to use correctly). It's the reason why they have you put in all the package data during the listing process and the buyer put in his address when creating his account... so that they can supposedly get an exact quote as to what to charge the buyer when he pays. The error and difference in charges is on their faulty software regarding this instance given the package data is correct during listing process.

Re: UPS overcharging on golf clubs.

What I'm going to do next time is to just take some estimates by using the FedEx or UPS site (or Pirateship) to at least get an idea of costs to a few different zip codes, and I'll simply have to add the difference as a handling fee so it rounds up.  I don't know - it's very frustrating.

Re: UPS overcharging on golf clubs.

Others already mentioned the issues with the eBay shipping calculator and purchasing labels through eBay for UPS and FedEx which are sometimes followed by unilateral upcharges. I seldom ship items UPS or FedEx but when I do I use Pirate Ship to get an estimate of what the shipping cost is going to be. Like you I am on the east coast so I check to see what the highest rate would be from my location to CA and use a flat rate cost to all buyers in my listing.

When the item sells I purchase the shipping label through Pirate Ship and upload the tracking information into the eBay order. Like farmalljr  I have never had an upcharge for anything I have shipped using Pirate Ship and UPS or FedEx. If there is a significant difference between the actual shipping costs because the buyer happens to be on the east coast you can always refund the buyer. Something you could also note in your listing description.
