Two posts today from angry folks because of another listing they saw....

I noticed two separate posts today from folks upset because of something they saw in another persons listing. Don't want to hijack their threads so thought I'd start my own. One was about price gouging, which wasn't price gouging at all but just people who resell items for a higher price- aka business. Another was because someone felt that people were selling items they'd created in their own homes without licensing agreements on copyrighted material.

What someone else is doing in their listings displeases them, so they now feel entitled to "tell on them". Neither of those two posters had any rebuttals either.

One tried to claim it was the equivalent to seeing a child being abused and failing to report it. Yes, that is correct, that OP felt that when he sees someone selling a homemade replica Star Wars item and he cannot report them, that it is the equivalent of seeing physical harm being done to a living creature.

Reminds me of someone I used to know named Charlie. Many years ago Charlie called me extremely upset because a woman was parking her car so closely to the car next to her, it made opening the drivers door difficult. Naturally I presumed he was the driver of the other car, so I suggested he write a nicely worded note and place it on her windshield. That's when he told me it wasn't his car she was parking next to.

After a long pause, I asked him why this was upsetting him if he wasn't the owner of the other car. He said it was because the woman had no right to do that....she was in the wrong. After another longer pause, I replied that perhaps the woman had spoken to the actual driver of the other car in advance. Perhaps the woman was disabled, or a larger person, who needed extra room to open her door wider, so she got permission to park closer to the car on her right. Perhaps the other driver was making an exception for this woman. I pointed out that since he hadn't spoken to either of these people, he had no way of knowing the full story, so there was no reason for him to get so worked up. Charlie hung up on me....

There is actually a legitimate reason for people to want to do this one. Many times, copyright holders will look the other way when it comes to fans making items like that-- as long as they are not making a profit off them. The moment people start trying to use someone else's copyrighted material to make a profit, it can bring the wrath of the company down on the heads of fans-- ALL of the fans, not just the ones who are trying to use it to make money, and so the company can start aggressively sending C&Ds to everyone who makes unauthorized replicas, etc. even if they aren't profiting off them.

It's like the Japanese doujinshi culture: there is an entire culture of fan-made comic books based on TV series and the like in Japan, and the companies who own those shows look the other way because it's understood that you don't charge any more for the comic books than it costs to actually print them. They see it as good advertising and it doesn't harm them in any way as long as the artists aren't raking in the money with their fan-made items. But you can bet they'd swoop in and shut things down if people turned it into an actual profit-making venture, which would ruin everything for everyone else.

Selling stuff based on someone else's copyrighted material is a very iffy thing and a lot of fans don't like the idea at all because they don't want to lose the ability to make their own stuff for fun, not profit, which can happen if the company decides they are going to go after creators of fanworks.

I got some Hello Kitty fabric 15 years ago before Sanrio copyright was enforced. I was once able to list my Hello Kitty handbags here. There were also sellers on here with Sanrio charms that I purchased to make necklaces. Before long saying "Hello Kitty" was not permitted, so it just became a "kitty cat print purse". Now I won't even dare list it. A woman in my partner's town had a store last year and she took all my forbidden to be listed online merchandise and put it her store really cheap so I could get rid of it. I'm still sitting on 80 enameled Hello Kitty charms but I'm glad the necklaces are mostly all gone. I got rid of some purses too except for the fact I have a few unfinished ones. I don't think I'll bother to finish them unless I know someone I can gift one to or have another consignment shop that will take it. All of this based on stuff I bought 15 years ago when it was tolerated.

Late to the par-tay as we attended a wake today and finally are back.

Can someone share the nickel version of what occurred?  Sounds like a lot of excitement for a Friday!  (and evidently, not the good kind?)

@femmefan1946 Oh yes, because of my avatar I have been called "Black Barbie" "Black (b-word)", and other racist type names, and I am Caucasian.  People feel the need to associate a visual with who they are speaking to or addressing online, so they base it on the avatar. Plus now it's more common for people to call names online and hide behind 1st amendment claims....

Wow.  That is terrible.  Horrible, actually.   (And all this time, I thought you were the "real" Barbie posting and I wondered why I never got invited to meet Ken or ride in the Barbie Sports Car!  😉  j/k  - I just figured you sold Barbies, collected Barbies....never actually looked at your listings).

Wondering what I can change my Avatar to......

Re: Two posts today from angry folks because of another listing they saw....

@yuzuha I am onboard with what you posted, but I think you misunderstood what I was referring to. The person complaining was just a fan, like we are, and he is angry because someone else created their own small replica or fan art. This person wants to effectively report the seller to the copyright holder. They want to tell on the fan who created a replica fan art item.

The seller isn't raking in money, this may well be a one off replica, just another art fan creation as you said. The seller created a piece for fun and posted it for sale in case someone else wanted to own it. However this one complainer feels they have the authority to go around eBay and find these listings, then report them to the companies to stop the individual sellers. This is contrary to what you posted. What this person is attempting to do is counteractive to what you said you want to do- have the ability as a fan to create your own stuff for fun....

LOL, this really made me laugh. I like your cats avatar, don't change it....

Now I can see others purposely changing their avatars to something in order to provoke a response. Can you imagine every female now changing to a masculine avatar in order to get people to listen to them. Talk about Catfishing....😋

@katzrul15 You didn't miss anything. I just happened upon two, now three, different postings today where someone was complaining because of another seller's listing and wanting to report the seller. It was just one of those days where people were really looking in other people's windows, just trying to find something to complain about.... Look they're eating off paper plates, let's report them....

Well, our chief dishwasher is on strike, so we gotta use paper plates!  lol

Well, I went to a wake and it was the best darn party I have been to in years!  We laughed, cried, sang, toasted and roasted and I think I was hugged more today than in the last 5 years total.

And then we stopped at an IKEA on the long drive back and I got turned around and lost trying to get from the desks area back to storage solutions area.  (Of course, the libations from the afternoon fracas might have had something to do with it.  lol  - I don't usually drink, but we toasted about 40 times.....)

Capitalism and making money on goods or creations are fine and dandy.  Stealing another's COPYRIGHTED ideas and creations are not.  I am a musician/artist/writer and craftsperson and I would hate it if something of mine that I worked hard to bring to fruition was stolen from me.

We get our panties all in an uproar when China appropriates and copies our things...what makes it right for anyone else to do so?

1st Amendment only applies to government censorship...eBay boards are not the government.  And I find it sad that you would be subjected to such harrassment, your doll is beautiful.  I once as a child had a black Rose O'Neill kewpie with wings that I loved very much.  She had a red heart on her chest.
