When I try to add this person to my Blocked Bidders list, I get an error message telling me that it's not a valid user name. I've gotten numerous messages from this person and they even made one purchase from me. How can eBay not recognize their username when I try to Block them?

They are possibly now NARU - find the purchase and click on the user name

The Buyer Name for that purchase is exactly the same as is on his messages, and is the name I'm trying to put on my Blocked list.

Try logging out and logging back in. What browser are you using? Try using anything but Firefox and see if it helps. Good luck!

Just being thorough here to make sure this isn’t user error. Forgive me if you’ve checked this already.
When transferring info like screen names or addresses, do you type it out by hand or do you highlight the area and copy/paste? Even if sometimes it seems counter productive, I’m a fan of copy/paste method because I am not relying on my eyes… I tell this to my employees too who sometimes make mistakes when not copy/pasting.
Depending on fonts, characters I, l, and 1 can often be confused for each other. (In case you can’t tell within the default forum font, the first character is the Capital letter i, the second is a lower case L, and the last is the number 1). The same thing goes for O and 0 (Capital o and number zero). Copy/pasting eliminates this confusion and possibility of address typos.

Yes, I understand that, but if you actually click on the ''buyer names'' feedback it will show if they are NARU
which could be the reason you can not block them - they may no longer exist.
Click on my FB and it will show you I am reg in AUstralia
Or you can type into Google > ebay.com/usr/THEBUYERSID and it will take you to the profile page

Okay, it turned out to be something rather odd. There was already one (and only one) name on my Blocked list, and apparently when I clicked on Save (or whatever you click on to add a new name to the list) the system was focusing, so to speak, on that other name - which IS likely NARU, because I put it on there so long ago I don't even remember who they were or why I did it - and rejecting IT, rather than the new name I was adding. Once I removed that old name, it accepted the new name immediately. If it works that way for everyone, how on Earth can someone be expected to check every name already on the list to make sure they're all still registered users before adding another name?
Anyway, thanks to everyone for your suggestions.

If the buyer is NARU, it should not reject. The old ids that are no longer registered eventually change to numbers on your BBL. When you add a new id make sure you put a coma and space first: User id <coma> <space> user id <repeat>. A number of times in the past I have cut and pasted the id in wrong place and it rejected. Occasionally there is a glitch, but will work after changing browsers and trying again.
Also, go here: Buyer Management | eBay and make sure "Don't allow blocked buyers to contact me" is turned on.
